'05 EVO VIII wing replacement or delete questions
Hi All,
First, apologies if this has been discussed before; I did several searches and couldn't turn up much.
My EVO VIII wing -- like many of the others on this board -- is nearly entirely stripped of its clear coat. The dealer is telling me it will be months to replace it since the part is backordered (yes, if I replace it, I want the VIII wing like it came with from the factory, not the cost-cutting cheesy IX one).
Though, really cutting to the heart of the matter, best of all would be no wing at all. Had the wing been an option, I would have never ordered it.
So the way I see it, I could either:
A) wait and have the wing replaced under warranty or
B) take it to a body shop now and have it removed and (I presume) have them touch up the bolt holes (??)
Does anyone have any idea how big of a job B) is or what I should expect to pay?
And would I be better off selling my entire trunk lid to someone with an RS (my car is white) and swapping it with their trunk lid? (I don't like this option as the VIN sticker won't match, the paint may be off, and I'm not convinced this won't require paint work as well since the trunk lid appears to be painted in place. Plus I'm not sure how easy it would be to locate such a person, and I'd probably have to get the wing replaced first.
Or would I have any luck convincing the dealer to let me "cash out" of the warranty claim (maybe at dealer part cost) to help pay for the paintwork? I'm guessing this is a long shot, but maybe there is an enthusiast minded dealer (especially one that does their own body work -- if I went through them to get the trunk patched up).
Thanks all for any advice here...
Best,
John

Cost some guy around $600 at a body shop to fill the holes and paint the entire trunk........you can remove the wing until you fix it and simply use a color matching vinyl sticker or have a body shop colorsand the wing in which case they wouldnt need to remove it. I had my cf hood color sanded due to excessive oxidation and it looks better than new. That route cost me $100. I'll find a link showing how to do it yourself......let me find it....
**EDIT**
Found it....

He did the work himself and saved some money....just took him some elbow greese!
Good luck!

$600 to remove the wing... yikes!
Thanks for the link! Yes, I ran across that thread when I was using the search feature before posting. Interesting idea -- though if I go that route, I'll just wait the 3 months and have the dealer do the work. The wait isn't bothering me as much as the wing is, it would seem.
Does anyone know if the dealer replaces the wing, is paint work involved in the procedure? Or do the wings come factory painted and just get bolted in place? Is it a big job just to get the wing physically removed from the trunk lid? Do you have to crack paint to get it off?
Thanks for the info on vinyl stickers... interesting thought. That way, if the wing is easily removable, I could remove the wing now, put it back on to have it replaced by the dealer, take it back off and put it in my closet, and have a new wing lying in wait when I go to sell the car... or perhaps just sell it as new (I wonder if there is a market) and suck it up and pay for the paint work.
Thanks & sorry for all the questions...

$600 includes the cost (this cost will vary at all body shops) to repaint the trunk & fill the holes. If the dealer fixes it for you, great! If not, call a body shop and ask them how much to color sand and buff the wing....like I said, it cost me $100 to do my entire cf hood....the wing should be less.
There is a market to sell your wing if it is in sellable condition.....someone with a lancer or even other evo owners may want it for their rs.....

Thanks all for the advice.
Wow, $225. I thought they would sell for a bit more. I thought I remembered the wing was a $600 option back on the '04 models.
Is there a how-to for removing the wing, or is it very straightforward?
Thanks!

$600 to fill in the holes and repaint the trunk is crazy.
I think the idea of buying a painted trunk without the spoiler holes would be ideal. Even if it doesnt come painted, it'll probably cost $100-$200 to paint it and switch out the existing trunk with the wing intacted.
Now the only thing left is to find how much a trunk without holes costs.

Taking the wing off your car is very easy, theres 2 bolts and 2 nuts and it's has adhesive, just take it off have a shop re clear coat it for about $100, it should not peel again, then wait for the one you ordered from the dealer to come in and sell your old wing for $200 and you come out on top

Or you could replace the stock deck spoiler w/ a smaller, aftermarket unit like I did.
Much less obnoxious.
