hey everyone...

i drive my evo as a dd and get most of my kicks beating odessey's off the stop light line and cutting off grandpa on the right hand lane (j/k) but basically my evo's sole purpose is driving to and from work on the highway...however, most ppl seem to be more aggressive and are driving about an avg of > 80mph in 55mph zones or 45 mph construction zones...my worry (other than getting an expen$ive ticket) is if you drive your evo, or any vehicle for that matter > 80mph the majority of the time, would that shorten your engine life?

Um I don't know, but everybody in SoCal drives 80mph and up, I just try and keep pace. I guess that is why Californians go through cars like candy.

As of now I NEVER drive more than 5 mph over the speed limit, no matter where I am. I have one ticket on my record from about two years ago, got a gay-assed ticket a month ago for not stopping completely as I was pulling out of a post office and then one a week ago for going 70 in a 55 while passing a big rig. So just call me Grandma for the next couple of years (unless I can prevail in traffic court).

I honestly don't think that driving 80 versus 55 is going to dramatically shorten your engine life. The Evo's engine is very sturdy. Now if you drove it 150 mph on the highway for hours at a time every day, then I would imagine it would make a difference.

I don't see the speed being a problem. At 80 you're turning @ 3500 rpm which is nothing for one these motors.

It's more a consistent RPM for long periods of time that will hurt an engine and that can happen at any speed as long as it's a constant RPM maintained for a long duration. That's part of the reason these cars don't have cruise control. Just vary your speed a little and it should not be an issue at all.

i too used to drive 60-65 in a 55mph zone but thought to my self "damn it i have an evo!" so, got a v1 for my "3rd eye" (you can never have too many of those) and have been driving fast and safe...i just love the heck outta my evo and with me having close to 27k in about 18 mos of ownage had me worried...

A V1 is next on my list. The 70 in a 55 ticket is going to cost me about the same price as buying one.

Going 80-90 vs. 70 probably isn't going to shorten the life of the motor any significant amount. You're still only spinning 3.5-4k rpms. Now, if you're cruising at 7k rpms all the time... that might do something

Fuel economy will take a hit, but the car's a blast on fast freeways. Recently ran with some fast traffic, and still got 22 mpg, averaging around 80. The turbo is in boost quite a bit, what with cruising at 3500 rpm and a lot of passing.
I wouldn't worry about engine wear as long as you don't keep it over 4K for prolonged periods.

interesting comments , I also drive my car as a dd and mainly highway to and from work. Average speed for me is 60-65mph crusing and getting honked at. Especially at night when coming from work no one in the freeway. Listening to music and just cruising at 65mph... its all good.

Would that be hurting the turbo/engine for not using "spirited driving that often"??

i doubt it hurts our engines since we have 1997cc engines which we need to rev high to reach its potential. at 80mph we're at about 3500rpm, thats nothing...do drive around at 140 all the time, that will hurt it after a while. dont worry about your car, the 4g63 is strong...i know people who track their evos and they have not run into any engine problems yet

EVO IX RS 80mph and about 25 MPG.. pretty damn good!

Can you or anyone here please explain to me why is it bad to drive at a constant rpm for a long period of time?

Operating within a very small rpm range could develop an issue where engine generates a certain frequency (harmonic) that actually changes the structure of the metal (I've heard it referred to as crystallizing not sure if that is the proper term) of internal components and cause them to fail. Ideally the harmonic balancer would absorb these harmonics but, that really doesn't do anything for the turbo which I would think could suffer from a similar issue but, I'm not totally sure on that.
