Understanding My Evo
#18
dude you dont get a car cuz u know everything about it (most of the time) you get a car cuz u wanna learn about it, and learn the ins and outs.
he just wants to learn some things about it.. **** i remember on my first evo i didnt even know where teh turbo was! now i know more than the avarage evo owner.
hes asking on this site cuz its the EVO SITE, and he wants to know about his EVO.. man ppl are soo gay on this website.. it makes me wonder why im still on it.
as for you kid who doesnt know anything about his evo, try n find ppl local to you that own evos n talk to them, learn the ins and outs.. also read alot on here.. thats how i learned some stuff. just read old forums about problems ppl had, and how it was fixed, and what certian problems are, and look at pictures n stuff and u cna basically tell what alot of parts are.
but i suggest finding someone in your area greatly.

Takes time. Check the howstuffwork.com site. Also, try the "Auto for Dummies", "Modding for Dummies", "Haynes Xtreme Sport Compact Performance", and
MHowt to Tune and Modify Engien Management System". Those books will give you a basic idea about the working of car, modding, etc...of course you want to spend some time browsing the forum.

Ok guys, let's keep it on-topic and keep the flaming to a minimum. cronicmole, something like this could probably be put in the Newbie/FAQ section, or your local Regional for some better responses. Anyway, good luck with your info search, most people here are only too willing to help out.

Actually whats going on is a person posted that he didnt know anythin about cars, and when a member commented he posted in the wrong area he resorted to name calling. I make a statement about learning to roll with the punches. Then you resorted to name calling.
But yea, that makes me the *****. Grow up.

Just read and learn, kid.
FYI, the reason you get a lot of sarcastic remarks for questions like this over here is becasue the majoraty of EVO owners previously owned DSMs. Therefore there was no real "learning curve" for them...

I live across the road from some guys who live for cars i always go by them too see what they are working on, so recently since i got the evo they ask me what i think about this part this turbo etc and I have no idea what they hell they are talking about When i open up my own hood i dont know whats going on in there it's frustrating knowing you have a good car but if u need somethhing fix or installed u have to take it too someone else i really need to learn more i'm dedicated anyone willing to help me or advice or something....what are forum buddies for
The majority of modern engines are internal combustion engines meaning the combustion process takes place inside the engine within something called a cylinder, rather than the outside. All of this takes place within an ENGINE BLOCK with is a metal housing for everything engine related.
Major components of the engine are the INTAKE/EXHAUST VALVES and SPRINGS which sit on the ROCKER ARMS. These valves open and close when something called a CAMSHAFT rotates, and basically tips the rocker arm causing the valve to open and close. These components are protected by something called a VALVE COVER. Okay, with that said... lets move onto the intake and exhaust ports. INTAKE PORTS are where the air and fuel mixture go into the engine, and EXHAUST PORTS are where the exhaust gases exit the engine.
Okay. Then there's the HEAD which actually attaches to the cylinder itself. For a good seal, there is something called a HEAD GASKET that is place inbetween. If that head gasket is no good, you'll get leakage... and that's a no no.
Coolant. Verrrrrrrrrrry important stuff. So coolant. You should already know what coolant is. It cools things down. There is either liquid cooling, or air cooling(not many cars use this, but an example is the VW Beetle). There are little cutouts in the engine block that allow coolant fluids or air to flow through, effectively cooling down the engine. Enough said. I'm not going to go in-depth with all the cooling components because I feel lazy.
Then the camshaft. Hmmm, what's a camshaft and what does it do? A camshaft is an apparatus used in piston engines to operate the valves in a piston engine. It consists of a metal rod running the length of the cylinder bank with a number of oblong lobes or cams protruding from it, one for each valve. The cams force the valves open by pressing on the valve as they rotate.
Spark plug. Ahhhh, the biggie. Spark plugs are shaped like a small cylinder. The spark plug creates the spark in the cylinder of the engine, igniting the fuel and air mixture which in turn allows the engine to run.
Piston. Oooooh.. The piston. Anyway, a piston. A piston is a a cylindrical shaped component that moves up and down, side to side, whatever, in the cylinder depending on the position of the crankshaft, and engine type, in its rotation. During 3 strokes of a 4 stroke engine the piston is pulled or pushed by the crankshaft while during the compression stroke it is pushed by the explosion of the air/fuel mixture. And I'm too lazy to talk about rod bearings, so you go research that. Now for piston rings. Piston ring are fitted into the cutouts, or grooves of a piston. There are two types of piston rings. Compression rings are for sealing the pressure in the engine combustion chamber, and oil rings are used to remove excess oil off the cylinder wall.
Onto the crankshaft. This part is also known as "the bottom end". This is the shaft at the bottom of the engine that turns as the pistons fire. The pistons force the crankshaft to rotate in a circular motion. The crankshaft has a connection to the flywheel, clutch, and eventually the main shaft of the transmission, torque converter and possibly belt pulley or PTO, but I won't get into that. The crankshaft if connected to the pistons by something called a connecting rod. Duhhh. These connecting rods are also known as con rods. They are usually made of steel for production car engines, but can be made of aluminum or even titanium for high performance engines. They are not really solidly connected at either end, so that the angle between the con rod and the piston can change as the rod moves up and down and rotates around the crankshaft.
That's all I'm going to tell you because I'm off to a party. Later. Good luck with the research.

I feel bad for any newbie to the evo forums posts, everytime someone that is a veteran of these forums pounces on them. It is seriously immature, I have been on many forums and never seen the hostility towards other fellow car enthusiasts of the same car. Every new user posts there is always someone who likes to bash, seriously if you have nothing to say that is not helpful to the person don't say anything at all... in fact didn't your mother tell you to do that back when you were 5? I am not trying to get under anyone's skin, its just that we are all supposed to be together here and i for one have been bashed a few times so i know what it feels like. I know enough about cars to be dangerous but i dont know everything because like all of us i have more on my plate then just cars. Just be nice, respect new members and help out if possible. If you can't then don't worry about it there are enough members on here that someone will be willing to help. No need to start something out of nothing.
And i hope the admins are reading this and watching posts of new members, i know that if they were to keep tabs they would see what i am talking about. New users getting bashed for questions they ask just because they don't search or they don't look it up themselves. Just help or don't, no need for some nasty 2 cents.
