Question Need some EVO purchasing help.

Hi,

About to take the plunge and pickup an EVO 8. I was wondering if there are any purchase procedures I should use with the EVO. What I mean is, I will check the rear wing for bubbles, give the paint, wheels, interior a good once over to inspect for damage. So help me here, what else am I looking for? Anything in particular I should check for? I don't know Mitsubishi or EVO and have no idea where the problem areas might be.

To sunroof or not to sunroof, that is the question. My dealer has both in the color I want. (Red) I was wondering how much will that affect the stiffness of the car. I will AutoX and take it to track days and I'm wondering if that will interfere with my helmet or rattle? My wife suggests taking my helmet to the dealership but I don't feel warranty issues will be easy after I drive the new car off the lot with my helmet on.

Thanks for any advice.

Cheers,

Bill

You will have less helmet clearance with a sunroof. I'd take your wife's advice and take your helmet down to the dealership to test fit yourself in the car with the helmet on.

The sunroof also adds a little weight, like 50lbs. So if you're super-**** about weight savings, don't get it. And as IUP200 said, Mitsubishi claims the sunroof doesn't comporomise the rigidity of the car.

Since you plan to autocross and run at the track, note that the sunroof adds about 35 lbs of weight to the car, and all 35 lbs is up way above the center of gravity. So for $750, you're adding weight to the car and raising its center of gravity... Seems like an easy decision to make.

But that's just my opinion. I got my Evo with no sunroof; my other three cars all have them, but they rarely get used.

Take your helmet to a different dealer. I had to I'm kinda tall at 6'10'' and had to know if I fit with my helmet. A friend at the Dallas Auto Show also let me see if I fit in the STi with my helmet. it was a bit tight. I fir in my bro's and friends Evo's with sunroof with my helmet fine. But each person is proportioned differently. Find out one way or another.

I spend as much time as permits at the track and a few autocrosses, fewer each year as I spend more time at tracks, but sunroof is just a must for me. I still have to drive it 15 hrs during the weekdays and sunroofs are great at distracting you from how slow you have to drive and just how little of the car is being used...

I personally would not take your helmet....mitsumishi's warrentys say that any damage caused by racing is not covered...if they see you getting into an evo with a helmet...the first time you come in with a warrenty issue, the dealer might just try to claim that you caused the damage from racing

If you roll it, better to not have the sunroof

Ok, I'm going to think some more on the sunroof. But right now I'm leaning against it. FYI, I'm only 5'10" so clearance may not be an issue but weight and usefulness are.

But no one has anything to check on the pickup of my new EVO? When I bought my S2000 there were about 10 things to check to make sure the car was 100%.

Cheers,

Bill

Uhm - I checked for the basics:

-Exterior (paint, CF wing, wheels, etc.)
-Mileage - if it has miles, guaranteed they're hard ones
-Front license plate (don't ever drill mine)
-Spring spacers (I didn't, but you should)

Of course, judging from your post, you probably have all the basics covered anyways. Good luck with the new car - I'm sure you'll love it!!!
