Will There Be A 6spd USDM Evo??

If that's true, I'll wait for mine...
really people, is a 6 speed really an advantage over a 5...? not to me... that's one extra cog you gotta sort out when ripping through the twisties...
5 speed for me as long as it's available...

Just watched Best Motoring special on EVO 8 and on the track straights, the EVO with 6 speed is only 2 kph faster (1.25 mph) than the 5 speed (220 kph and 218 kph). Watching the in car video with the driver shifting at 6 speed is pretty crazy. I really do not see the benefits of having 6 speed not unless it is a sequential tranny.

A 6speed and cruise control means when competing *ahem* participating in an event like One Lap, it's a lot quieter while cruising in a pack of cars from venue to venue. Or when not driving the car the way as shown in the acquatance video, as is not the way your supposed to..., It's nice to have a higher cog.
I'm holding off till 2004 to see if cruise control and a 6spd show up as well as what the STi does reliability wise.

1) The track was too short for them to top out the 6th gear.
2) When entering bends, you have options. Choice is good.
3) Six speed is great when just cruising along and not racing. Helps to be fuel efficient (thereby saving money for those mods )

All the reviewers in the magazines that compared the two actually liked the Mitsu 5-speed better than the Subbie 6-speed saying it felt better and was easier to shift.
I theory the 6-speed allows you to space each gear closer together and all things being equal you lose less rpm between gears. Some also sell the 6-speed as a fuel mileage (MPG) advantage with a tall 6th gear for better mileage. I'm not sure if Subbie claims any of these.
It seems to me to be more of a marketing advantage or perceived marketing advantage to have a 6-speed than anything else.
I won't notice not having a 6th gear and the few cars I've driven with 6-speed trannies didn't seem to me to be any advantage other than being able to brag that you have a 6-speed.
I'd rather a short-throw easy shifting 5-speed for now. At best it's about as important to me as Subbie's DCCD...an interesting feature that is not much more than a toy in every day driving.

I think the 6 speed transmission is just another phase in auto technology. All the new exotic and expensive cars have them. We started out with a few, but now the sixth gear is like the "in" thing. Apparently tho, the EVO beats the STI in 1/4 mile (forgot magazine name) because you have to go through more gears in the STI, since shifting shaves a few milliseconds off the acceleration. 6 gears is not always better, but you gotta admit, its pretty freakin' cool.
