effect of road deicer on underbody parts
For those living in winter climates, just wondering if you've noticed the deicer causing any corrosion of the aluminum bits under the car. I'm asking because I've read that some of the new non-organic deicers are nicer to steel but more corrosive to aluminum.

around here the municipalities are still using rock salt (ugh i hate that stuff).
i just make sure to wash my undercarriage as often as possible, and limit driving when there are heavy amounts of snow on the road.
my last car didn't really show any damage from the salt, but it was only a little over a year old when i traded her in.
do you know what kind of other road de-icers they are using? is it like those little beads of calcium chloride?

it's all rock salt in pittsburgh.
and they are very liberal with their application of it too. sometimes they will lay it down so thick before the snow even starts i have to use the gravel setting on the ACD.
heh, i am sure it does wonders for the enviroment.

You think Ppittsburgh is bad? Try coming to Chicago! Even when the snow is long gone and all melted away the road are still just as white, it's ridiculous! However when you live in Chicago you have to get used to it along with all the damn potholes.
P.S. Nice sig picture MondoBongo. That game has been the most addicting part of my life for the past month. It's kinda sad but it's hard to get over!

I dont plan on driving my IX this winter unless the roads are clear.I drove my 03 8 during the winters and took it to a touchless car wash once a week that has the undercarraige wash.Never a problem with any kind of corrosion at all.

One of the first things I did was paint all the bare under pieces, living in NJ where salt + sand is used. It was hard not sending it all out for anodizing.
