Source of Future Rust Problem w/pic

After taking off my rear crash beam, I noticed this under the monting plates. This is more than a little surface rust. The metal is starting to pit and it is starting to spread under the nearby paint causing small bubbles underneath. Not a big deal for now, but years down the road I can promise that this will be a major problem. It seems that almost all cars have a spot like this somewhere on it that causee a certain panel or area to rust out years later. I guess that I found "that spot" on the Evo. I will be stripping the rust from effected area and treating it before I put the new bumper back on.

hmmm, since I've got my car nearly completly torn down, maybe I should take care of that (re: rear isn't completly down)

The same effect is on the front bumper, behind the impact bar. For those wanting to check/remedy their issue there as well. Though at that part, there's enough thick metal that it isn't a major issue. (re: will take a good long while)

Seems like this wouldn't be a problem if mitsu would put the crash bar on after the car is atleast primer.

From the looks of it, this is not a isolated case. paints the car with the crash beam on. So this spot gets no paint or even primer. Duh! This is going to be a problem for all of us. Would love to see this spot on an 03 that has been driven through several Northeast winters. It aint gonna be pretty!

anyone know of a write up on taking off your crash bar. I want to hit mine with some paint before it's a problem. Is it an easy job?

Either that, or the primer/coating wasn't allowed to properly cure prior to the crash beam being bolted on.

The crash bar is 4 12 mm bolts and takes about 35 seconds to take off. Taking off the bumper is a little more work. Probably about 45 minutes or so. Still not a big deal if you plan of keeping the car for a long time.
