Mild Steel vs. Stainless Steel

What are the disadvantages of mild steel vs. Stainless steel?

i'm looking into buying the HKS Hi power exhaust but it comes in these two options. someone told me its all about rusting but someone else with the mild steel version told me that you dont have to worry about it rusting for 50 years.

wats the truth behind this? is mild steel that bad?

Mild Steel is cheaper and will rust before Stainless steel !!!!

For mild steel I'd be willing to believe 50 months but not 50 years.

Mild steel will rust the first time it gets wet, unless its coated with something.

Mild steel rusts very quickly.

It can be coated with zinc which will help to prevent corrosion, without a coating, it will start to rust the first time moisture hits it.

SS is the better choice.

I doubt the mild steel will rust any time soon. I've had an HKS Hi Po on my 03 since practically the day I bought it and the exhaust has not rusted. Think about it - why would anyone sale an exhaust that would quickly rust, especially a company the size of HKS?

Because HKS and Apexi have done it for years.

Think about this, why would a big company sell an exhaust that uses poor materials and charge you more than comparable exhausts that are stainless steel. Because they don't care about you, they care about your wallet and your ignorance.

The Apexi N1 has been coated mild steel forever and people are still dumb enough to buy them. Mine didn't last more than 3 years before it rusted through in a few New England winters and I've personally seen multiple DSMers who have the same problem with mild steel exhausts.

The mild steel is a cheaper steel. IN TIME which may be a long time... it will tend to rust and/or rot out much quicker than stainless steel which may never do that. Im not sure though if its any heavier.

My wife and I used to have identical cars. Both cars had mild steel exhaust systems. My car needed one new exhaust system during its lifetime. My wife's car needed a new exhaust every two years. Same car different driving habits.

go with stainless if you're planning on keeping the exhaust/car for a long time.

Titanium!!

Ok, on topic, stainless will last longer, doesn't really rust. But if you don't live by the beach or snow, no big deal.

If you live where they put salt on the road, get stainless. If not, mild steel is fine, use the money you save towards your next mod. Aluminized is a fancy term of coated steel and should cost less than stainless but last longer than normal mild steel.

YEP. I had aluminized exhaust on my 86 turbo buick and never had any issues with it. Definetly a step up from the ol' mild steel, a nice alternative to stainless or yet titanium for someone on a budget.
