accidental oil change at 600miles
I noticed that my oil was about 1/4" above the high line on the dipstick from the dealer, so I decided to drain some of it out today. I accidently dropped the plug into my oil catch pan and had to let all oil drain out cuz it was so hot. So I ended up going to walmart to buy some 10W30 Mobil One synthetic to refill it up. I didn't use all 5 quarts either, is that right? My friend also said not to torque the oil bolt up too tight, cuz it can strip the oil pan. How much should I torque the bolt?

make sure you go back to dealer and do a 3k oil change just for show
cuz you dont want to void yoru warrenty by showing up 3600
600 miles late cuz they dotn know you did an oil change by accident

If the oil filter was not changed, it does hold some leftover oil. Also, it's nearly impossible to drain out all the oil -- the valvetrain and many internal components tend to adhere the oil, and pool it in several locations, like: the turbo lines, oil cooler, etc. I think it's entirely possible to require only 4.5 quarts of new oil.

Everyone has a different opinion when it comes to engine oil. Some claim the factory oil has additives and "needs" to be in the engine for 3k miles, others change it after 500 miles, etc.....
It also depend on how hard you drive, etc.....I did change mine at about 2400 miles after a few "track" miles, so it was due (in my mind).
I just kept a copy of my receipt for the oil filter (from the mitsu dealer) and a copy of my case of Mobile one.

You probably did the engine a favor by changing the oil at 600 miles. I think at least a few Evo owners have done an oil change at the same mileage as part of their break-in procedure, to remove all the metal particulate that was in the engine from manufacturing and wear-in. Did you examine your car's original oil that you drained?

It's hard to judge how much oil to put in after draining the oil and changing the filter. I've found that if you add oil per the spec of 5.4 qt capacity, you'll find you've over filled the crankcase. It's not too good to overfill the crankcase although I'm sure a few cc wont make much difference.
Anyway, what I recommend is to put in 4 quarts, start the engine and run it a bit, shut it down, wait a few minutes for the oil to drain back into the oil pan and then add oil a little at the time while checking it until you reach the desired level.
YMMV

Only if your driving is mostly high-speed highway driving, then 5000 mile oil changes would be appropriate for the Evo. Otherwise, follow the alternate 3750 mile interval given in the manual.

Dont worry at all. I changed mine at 600, 1000, 1500, and 2200. Each change was with Amsoil Turbo Form 10w30. And mine has not eaten a DROP since the 2000 mile mark, and I now have close to 3000 total miles. I think my engine is tight as a drum, especially because I run it so hard, and it doesnt eat any oil.
Each time ive only used 4.35 quarts of oil because Im not draining the oil cooler. Cladius pulls his oil line each time to drain the cooler but im too lazy. DONT PUT 5 QUARTS IN! Start out at 4, then go up from there.
