In case it's not clear, side-impact will more than likely be caused by another driver (DUI drivers, diabetic off/missed meds, little old asian ladies, etc.) of whom you have no control and which you have no control. AWD, great handling, and great skills won't save you from any of the above mentioned when they crash into you out of nowhere.

Just for comparison- my wife's cousin was hit on the driver-side by an F-150 at 40mph in his '96 Integra and he passed away. Know what the Integra's rating for front driver-side impact is? 4 out of 5.

Ratings are stupid...
The problem with most ratings is that you are never really given a clear idea of the MAGNITUDE of the difference between a (for example) two-star and four-star rating. Is the four-star vehicle able to keep you alive at twice the impact speed of the two-star? 50% more speed? 10% more?
My guess is that the difference in speeds needed to cause equal survival probabilities between the two vehicles in that example is pretty small.
They dumb stuff down so much for consumers that it's useless.

Dont' get me wrong- I love my beautiful TB IX MR, but it's not worth my life. Priorities...
Maybe I'll buy a tank...
EDIT: Can ratings be compared across car categories?
"Since all tested vehicles are impacted by the same size barrier, it is possible to compare all vehicles with each other when looking at side crash protection ratings." [NHTSA]

To save weight is seems the front end of the Evo has very thin metal and most of it is aluminum. The substructures seem like they are reinforced if you look under the car. Does a 2 rating bother me? Yeah it does but I also ride a motorcycle and there I basically have no crash rating. Crashing is just not an option!

C'mon guys why bother this kind of statistics?
Accident happen... and it will happen any time of the day whether
your're driving or not.
It doesn't mean you'll likely to get
hit on driver side because evo gets 2 of 5... and if you'll
get the stat for how many percent a car will get hit on the driver side is
very low considering how many cars getiing hit on the driver side and the total
of cars out there.

No matter what argument anyone tries to make about how the Evo would come out better, or how it is difficult to predict the outcome of an accident.
It is a fact that the Evo is not a strong car. I have owned many cars and the Evo is about the least strong and the least well equipped in terms of safety. When compared to an Audi, Benz, BMW, Porsche, Ferrari, and Honda (S2000), the Evo has a far weaker structure around the driver and in the roof.
I bought my Evo knowing this and it doesn't stop me from driving it, I just don't want to crash it. Whne I first sat in my AMG and GT3, one of the first thoughts that went through my head was...no this is a car I would want to be in if I had an accident!
Much of this is due to weight and cost of the vehicle but it would have been nice to have side airbags. Even the cheaper Honda S2000 is a stronger car BUT the S2000 is not built to perform like the Evo so something has to give.

it is a 2003 and 2004 model. they never tested it after that. the lexus IS300 was never tested on side impact ratings either. some cars that might perform just like the evo are not tested however. maybe if they tested the 05-06 it will be improved. I remember seeing year model differences like the montero sport where it tested poorly but the updated model showed a very good rating.
