Well EARLY 2G DSM's did not have crankwalk issues FWIW. I had a 1995 TSI AWD with a build date of April 1994 so I am pretty sure it was a 1st. I beat the **** outa that car and it worked flawlessly. The crankwalk threads (Which scared the hell outa me BTW) on www.dsmtalk.com were always the 1996-1997+ DSM's FWIW.
I have no idea how true this is, just what I have observed and it appears to be true.
The 1G's had aweful pistons though right? GREAT rods, but bad pistons and 7.8:1 compression Vs. 8.5:1 for the 2G. So 1G rods and 2G pistons and a ported 2G head on a 6-Bolt kicked *** I believe .
Then there was the Cyclone intake, uhhh, memories

You're close. The 6-bolt 4g63 can be found in DSMs from 90-92.5 and the 7-bolt 4g63 in DSMs from 92.5-99. However, first generation DSMs were made from 90-94 and the second generation DSM from 95-99. Point is, there are 1g's out there with the 7-bolt motor... a fact that many people overlook.
Yes, the 6-bolt 4g63 is collectively embraced as the better of the two because of its stout bottom end and it doesn't have the tendency to crankwalk like the 7-bolt does.
