Aftermarket intake on Evo?
I was actually just curious on what people think..
I know it for more HP etc etc. Better gas etc etc. But i was wondering
is the stock filter etc better than after market. Sounds like a stupid question
but I was just reading on what people said about it awhile back and I was
curious. And i was wondering is it worth it.

Take it from me who had to be a knucklehead and learn the hard way even after I was told by my tuner (Al "DynoFlash") not to put on an aftermarket intake with minimal mods. I put one on when I did my Mail in flash,TBE, MBC, BOV, FP and then went and dyno'd my car and needless to say I was very dissappointed with the results. My AFR's were off the chart. I called Al who told me to take off the intake and put the stock hose back on with a BR cone filter and I would see gains. Well I did just that and gained almost 50 WHP more.

It's not the filter you're reading about, but the intake box and pipe. The stock paper filter itself is garbage. All paper filters are garbage if you want to make power.
The often asserted idea here is that there is no reason to upgrade the intake box if you are under 400 hp or so. Honestly, pretty much any forum about any type of performance car will say the same thing.
You can make good power with the stock box and an upgraded panel filter.
However, there are benefits to a cone filter and upgraded intake piping. You get more filter surface area and therefore more flow. I've also seen much smoother airflow curves when logging/tuning Evos with aftermarket intakes. The ability to flow more air smoother will give you lots of options for the future, but will also help a moderately powered car.

its nice to be able to run aftermarket upper IC pipes. I figure just the cone filter is fine, though...also, this seems like a decent place to ask, does just the cone filter require a retune if changing from the stock box with a k&n? I've seen conflicting answers to this when I search...

If you have not been tuned before you'll have a little buffer in the AFR to play with since the Evo runs so rich on the stock tune. However, you may see some lean spots in the AFR curve. It will also gradually richen the fuel trims and eventually throw off the AFR curve even more.
If you are currently tuned with the panel filter then it's best if you get a re-tune for the cone filter. The margin of error in the stock tune is gone and if the filter pushes you to the lean side you might end up in dangerous territory.
