I had a 2002 s4, turbos crapped out at 70-80k miles, random electric problems, certain things would work then not work, etc., etc. And I fawking hated the smirk on the face of the service dept. guy every time I came in. Who I got to know very well, because I was there at least once a month.

They are nice cars, but to much of a headache to own. Im sure the N/A V8 would be better than the old bi-tubro model.

I have driven my Evo for 73 thousand miles in less than 2 years. the car has been perfect!!!!! no problems at all!!!! I must say that I drive it very hard on the freeway and streets. Lots of WOT acceleration.

I also keep up with routine maintenance.

I love this super car... lol

I had an A4 AWD with 6 cylinder non-turbo. As soon as the warrantee went out so did my money... w/out lube: mad:. The seat adjust (lean back) motor went out, and with labor 550.00 plus tax. Parts for that car are expensive and they are proud of there shiny marbled floor service area that served cappuccino. I didn’t drink any but the other customers that came in said thanks for paying for their cup they had.

That being said, the EVO is just barley cheaper but it is a hell of a lot more fun to drive. I could buy a full race clutch and flywheel for my Miata for under a grand. Try that with an EVO!

"...Not a car for a DIY'er..." I agree. I do all my own work except short block assembly and aluminum welding. I will never touch and Audi.

also forgot to mention you have to pull the motor to do any serious work/repairs/turbo work on the b5 s4.

i love them to death, but would never get one unless you have tons of time to work on the car or dont care about labor costs...

my 2000 S4 has 143k miles on it and has been relatively problem free from a mechanical standpoint. still has the original turbos, clutch and syncros. most of my miles were put on via freeway driving. never modded the car. never tracked the car.

have had the rear deck BlOSE speakers go out 3 times (the 3rd set is just disconnected now). the window washer bottle cracked twice. the LED screen for the computer/NAV stuff is basically dead. stereo and HVAC gremlins.

that said, i'd say i'm in the minority as far as having S4 issues. i'm debating what to do with the car at this point as it's due for water pump, timing belt, control arms and maybe some other stuff. not sure if i want to drop a few grand into getting everything sorted or if it's time to move on....

the only issue i've had with the Evo so far is that the stock CD player died after about 4 months. the Evo has been kept stock as well, so i'd have to say the stock stuff has held up quite well so far.

also, as others said, if you plan to mod your car, then the Evo is a much better choice. many more options available. parts are much cheaper. and you actually end up with a very fast car.

If you are looking at an S4 get ready for this:

Most VW and Audi guys can attest to this.

I had a 2000 Nogaro Blue S4, beautiful car inside and out, but lke many have said electrial gremlins are always around the corner.

Things like seat heater elements that run too hot, the center LCD information dash going out, and power window motors failing are common.

Not to mention the jam-packed engine bay. I'm always amazed at how Audi shoe-horned the bi-turbo V6 in there.

Look for the stock rubber throttle body boot to leak and the stock crappy plastic Bosch diverter valves to get stuck.

Not a car for a DIY'er.
