Automoble Magazine article this month
Compares the American versions of the EVO 7 with the WRX STI. The original post for this was on the Mitsi and Subaru usenet groups by Steve Muyo (?), I believe. Unfortunately, Automoble Mag doesn't have a web site so you'll have to check it out in the stores, but the upshot of the article was
STI:265hp, $30,000
EVO 7: 276hp, $37,000
The testers liked the EVO 7 better than the STI, because of the greater understeer of the STI and the most sophisticated suspension and drive of the EVO. Check out the original posts at alt.autos.Mitsubishi
or alt.autos.Subaru

Shooting themselves in the foot
If this is true, the EVO7 is gonna bomb here. No one is willing to pay $37,000 for an evo. For that price they are gonna have to refine the evo much more and clean up the interior. Ahh well.. for cheap horsepower, maybe we'll have to look at the dodge neon svt-4.
By the way, this is more a response to every single post that has claimed the evo is gonna be more than $30,000. If this happens, this car will *fail* in the US.

Those prices coming from using European conversions...the Evo is 7000 more expensive there. But when they are brought to the US expect the STi to be closer to the 37 (prob. around 33-36) and the Evo to be closer to the 30k (prob. 27-32). Thereis NO WAY the Evo will be 37k even fully loaded. If it was it WOULD fail. In my opinion it would not be worth the 37k in any way. I would have to go out and buy an '03 Mustang Cobra (with it's under-rated 390hp...has been dynoed 380 hp at the wheels!! )

:soapbox: my 2 cents. if mitsubishi was to make the mistake of selling the evo over 32, or allow the dealers to mark up prices, they will be sealing their own fate. Mitsubishi needs to market the Evolution at a consumer friendly price with as little refinements as possible. Otherwise, Nissan with their 3.5L Altima, 240hp Maxima, 350z, G35, Mazda with their RX8 and other sporty cars will totally anhillate Mitsubishi. Even if Mitsubishi sell the Evo well below cost of production, they must do so to prove dominance in the american car market. But that's just my 2 cents.

With the low numbers Mitsubishi is bringing over the EVO will not be a sales failure. There are plenty of people that will pay $35,000-$40,000 in the US for the performance the car is capable of. It will be a failure to all of the kids under 25 that hoped to have low to mid 13 second car for under $28,000.

I tend to agree with turbo442. This car will sell regardless. People that want performance will have to pay for it.
However, I feel that it should not cost much more here than anywhere else. has a chance to improve its sales and make up for some of its losses with other products in Japan, due to its weaker economy.

It may sell..but it WOULD NOT sell well at those prices. You may pay it but most people won't. For that price I myself wouldn't even buy it. I just can't justfy spending that much on a Lancer or economy based Mitsubishi with questionable reliabilty. There are too many high performance cars I'd buy first. They could sell a few thousand a year maybe at that price.
I don't know why we're even arguing about what people would pay when it WILL be under 32k. Some idiots may spend 37k+ with dealer markup though

Exactly.
The car may sell, but what Mitsubishi is hoping for is WRX type sales. And if this car would be priced at or above 30k it would not sell well IMO.
I for one would have to consider many other cars. In fact, as it stands with a price of "sub 30" I am now strongly considering the Infiniti G35C (coupe). That is one beautiful looking car and it will also start at "sub 30" range. Here's hoping they price it closer to 25 than to 30.
