Shifter is VERY notchy and rigid...solutions?

Hey all,

My IX's shifter have been pretty notchy ever since I bought it, but now it's starting to get real annoying. Every time I shift it feels like I have to use 'extra' force to get it in gear. Don't get me wrong here, I'm not using all my muscle to get it in the gate, it's just more than the normal amount of pressure. I even purchased some shifter bushings, which made it a tad bit 'smoother' but still nowhere as smooth as my VIII.

Is there a way to smoothen this out? Can I grease up around the shifter gates or something or do I need to take it to the dealer and get this checked out? Any tips can be of major help. Thanks in advance.

Mine has always felt like this. I have tried everything. Got the new exedy twin, adjusted clutch pedal, got buschur shifter bushings and got the greddy counterweight knob today and overall, it has improved but its still a little there. The GReddy knob will help conquer it the most though man. Buschur tranny bushings did jack **** as far as shifting notchyness... it just tighted up the shifter, thats all.

Honestly, I think the problem lays in the transmission. I guarentee a rebuild by Shep will fix the issue. Sorry, but good luck.

Yes , since the weather has become colder my shifter is a little more difficult to get into 1st gear , but after a few minutes of driving and letting the fluids warm up it seems normal to me.

When was the last time you changed the tranny fluid?

Unfortunately this is standard for our cars. There are a few things you can do to alleviate some of the notchiness though. Lube your bushings at the shift linkage, change your transmission fluid, ensure your car is warmed up prior to taking off, check to make sure that your clutch pedal adjustment isn't all the way down. I'm sure there are other things, but these are some of the things that helped me out. I have also changed out my shifter bushings and front engine mount to polyurethane ones. I did have the Kartboy ones in my shifting linkage but have removed them since.

mine was the same way...
then i ditched my buschur shifter bushings and the problem completely went away.

have you tried adjusting your clutch pedal?
whens the last time you changed your tranny fluid?

if you took it to the dealer they would most likely blame the problem on your mods. i tried to take mine there for the same problem when it was stock and they wanted me to leave it there for 3 days.... then i got bored one day and switched back to my stock bushings

Try changing to some different motor mounts, something more stiff.

A problem for this occurs quite often and its due to the gear oil. You will need to flush out the old one and put new one in. Also let your car get warmer so the oil heats up and not makes sticky shifting. Happened to me on my e7.

Read the owners manual for the maintainceschedule. For all the drivetrain fluids, I believe every 15k for 'severe' use and 30k for 'regular' use. If you haven't chewed through the brake pads yet, expect them to go out around 20k as that seems to be about the average for a daily driven, non-tracked car.
