The Evo's a very good winter car but in the end it comes down to driving style.
If your ABS is kicking in too often then it means your tires are not gripping.
Brake earlier and lighter.

ABS saved my *** a few times this past Thursday. RI was hit with alot of snow, shut down the entire state. Such a mess! Anyway I was virtually trapped in the city being one of the only cars to safely navigate through the mess of broken down and stuck cars. The ABS worked great stopping me sliding around

Get the Blizzak WS-50. I bought them back when they were like $140 each and they are well worth it. Mount them on your stock wheels and get a set of summer wheels for summer tires.
Also, stop trying to turn while braking. Brake, let off the brakes, turn, accelerate. If you have the WS-50's then just turn to full lock without braking. You'll slide straight for about a second, but then they'll grip and turn the car. Once you're turning, give it some gas to rotate the back end around and then steer with the rear.

you should get a narrower tire for the winter, it will give you way better handling in the snow.
that is why i said get 225 or, if its fit 215's. Also instead to get 45 get a 50.
but these are good ONLY in snow.

235/45/R17 is the size I have the WS-50's in. They work great and you still have some protection for the rim's lip.
They're awesome on snow and ice, and work just fine on dry pavement. In fact, I'm driving 400 miles one way on Wednesday (From Chicago to West KY) and I have no reservations about driving on the WS-50's for this road trip.

Yeah, the Evo's ABS is not nearly as polished as other ABS systems. It locks up way more than my Honda Accord used to, and is as subtle as a joy buzzer, but it isn't so bad as to ditch it. I use the ABS more of a warning system that I've exceeded the threshold than rely on it for stopping.
As far as tire sizes, like others here I would recommend going with a narrower-than-stock tire size. I've got LM-22 Blizzaks in a stock size, and the car still struggles with traction as much as other FWD cars we own.

I had the same problem with the stock tires and I was thinking the same.. but the problem is in tires... I used to step on the brake, and the car would only slide forward, hopping it will stop... so I started just punching the brake a bit, and it was lil bit better... Than I bought Toyos (all season) and now I can stop any way I want, punching it or hitting it hard (except ice)... If you are on budget, buy all season tires that can take you thrugh the snow... toyos were 175 a pieace, but i had a hook up so thats why i bought it... 100 a piece.. Good Luck!
