I just changed my oil. I don't know if its a special trick or not, but once you drain it and it stops dripping, put the plug back in and let it set for a few minutes. When you pull the plug a lot more oil starts to drain. I guess it gives it a few minutes to build up in the pan.

I learned this trick because I forgot to put a new crush ring on the oil drain plug and had to unbolt it to put a new one on.

Hope this helps.

PS: Mine only held around 4.5 quarts.

What will happen if you remove the filter? will the oil keep flowing out of the oil cooler or will you only drain the amount in the filter? I always wondered.

so when you remove the oil filter ,,will drain the entire oil except the oil tank whitch is just very little, belive me..
when i changed my oil i spined the oil filter not correct and when i filled the motor with brand new oil..after couple second i started the car and i just switched it off,cuz i looked under the car and theere was a leak cuz of the bad jointing of the oil filter,,so i had the clean all the mess, and do it again with new oil,,and then i spined finalli correct the oil filter....haha had fun that day.

and thats not everythink..when i filled it again,,i put the same amount of oil but somethink left in the oil tank,,so i had more oil than i was supposed to have..
so i took a large straw, and put it in the checking pipe where you check the oil,,and sucked it in my mouth and spit it in a cup,,i made it couple times and than it was ok....i was affraid to put the oil in my mouth but....
lol.. the oil has no taste,,so i brushed my teeth and everything was ok...

Thank you for the info! I put a little to much oil in and was considering just removing the filter. I always replace the crush washer and did not want to break the torque on the drainplug.

I think you can pump some oil from the dipstick tube if you have the correct hose?

Some members were saying you would get more oil out from the pan and also from the oil cooler. just my .02 cents. will try on my next oil change.
Did you check the level before draining your oil? It could be less than maximum before you drained it.

Two thoughts:
  • If you overfill A LOT (not just half a quart or so), the danger is that the oil level in the crank case will be so high, the crank shaft and rod bearings will actually spin into the oil and froth it up, which is a bad situation and can cause the engine to run dry or even seize. But that's only if the oil level is quite high.
  • That picture makes your oil look scary high, but sometimes some oil in the dipstick tube will rub into the dipstick and give a false high reading. You should always wipe the stick off carefully before each reading, and take a couple of consecutive readings to get it right, if there's any doubt and/or if the engine was running before the first reading.

So if I were you I would take several careful readings, wiping the stick down each time, to figure out exactly how high it really is. If it's much more than a millimeter or two above the full line, I would drain out a quart or so and try it again.

Oil pan: 4.5 liters
Oil Filter: 0.3 liters
Oil Cooler: 0.5 liters
TOTAL 5.3 liters

I understand the cooler remains full; therefore you would replace 4.8 liters (or 1.26 US gallons)

But the engine would be cold if you waited for 2 hours. You're supposed to check your oil when the engine is hot.
