Your degraded OCTANE value in your ecu. Ok here's how it works. The Evo has some dynamic timing for safety purposes. If your car is knocking then it will semi-permanently modify timing. If your car isnt knocking then it add's to the OCTANE value therby adding the timing that it removed. It also dynamically adjusts fuel trims.
The easiest way to reset your ECU is to remove the 20amp fuse closest to the front of the car (underhood fuse box next to battery). It's the 4th fuse from the front and if you look at the cover you will see a little engine diagram. Removing and replacing this fuse takes about 5 seconds and resets the ECU. Once the ECU is reset, start the car and allow it to idle for 2-10 minutes. When it first starts it will 'idle up' and then settle back down.
Reseting your ECU is not a fix, getting your car tuned so it doesnt continue to degrade your octane value and pull timing is the proper fix. The poor car is just trying to protect itself.
