rpms to high for cruising the freeway?

rpms to high for cruising the freeway?
Ive searched and searched on this site but found no answer or similar question asked, maybe cuz its such a newbie question but ...
ive only had my evo for about 3 weeks (completely stock) and i just noticed that when im on the freeway , the rpms stay above 3000 when im 65 mph and up , (stays at 3,500 rpm when staying at 85 mph to be exact). This seems too high for prolonged periods and makes me think im wasting so much damn gas or hurting the engine in the long run, but am i wrong?
What are the typical rpms for different speeds? (im a aily driver by the way)
maybe the evo is built to be like this because i know for any other car, 3000 rpms for a while is not too good for the engine and wastes too much gas...

If it's an SE that seems to be about right for highway cruising speed. That's why I like my MR (gotta love 6th gear ) lol But don't worry about cruising at RPM's like that. The engine will deffinately handle it.

yea an MR would have been sweet but yea i got the ix with no regrets though. so when do you shift to 6th? does it go back down to like 2000 rpms at highway type speeds when you do?
and those pills dont work for me, i drove 4 hrs straight one time after midnight and i was still falling asleep after chugging those damn rock sized pills

Yeah those revs will be perfectly fine. My first road trip in the Evo to North GA had me worried about overreving the car for a couple hours straight. On the way back, I didn't even notice the tach anymore. I've done a trip to TN constantly between 3500-4000 RPMs for 200 miles each way. I was in a hurry, but if I wanted better gas mileage, 60-65 MPH right at 3000 RPMs is nice and comfy.

Welcome to the world of 4 bangers.
These engines don't produce alot of power off boost. Keeping the rpm's up there actally helps by getting the rpm's closer to the peak torque area.
Notice the MR has a lower rated highway mpg, same engine and a little more weight. But the lower rpm's do have an effect.
