I've run without the top of the airbox for over a year. No problems, no issues. I also got a K&N Drop-in - induction/turbo/BOV noise was noticeably louder after K&N went in. Either way you'll be fine and you'll actually hear the spool.

Other plus side is if you take it in to your stealership, just put the top of the box back on and you wont have to worry about warranty issues - a cone filter (or other obvious aftermarket intake piece), while offering only slightly better flow, would jeapordize your warranty.

Bringing this topic back, a couple tuners on the SoCal Evo board have chimed in and are showing a 17whp gain from removing the air box lid.

Here is my solution... best of both worlds.

Looks stock with cold air induction...

But on the side (away from the motor) extra air can get in and sound can get out

The stock airbox w/clean OEM element works fine.

for $60.00 you can get a cone filter and adapter to connect to your maf sensor adapter.

Almost the best of both world because you are ingesting hot air from the engine bay through the cut on the other side.

While it's better than stock in terms of flow (pressure drop), air temperature is gonna be higher than it could be and that's not a good thing.

My solution is what you did but I also fab a snorkel on the cut to route cold air in:

It works like charm, I connect a hose to it that goes to the bumper vent. I have logged 15% drop in intake temp with this combined with a main snorkel scoop that I also fabricated
