Some power can be made with the stock box.Granted an intake setup might give you a little more.Get flashed either way .I have a drop-in right now and Ill be installing the injen intake kit anyday now.Ill get to see the gains first hand with retune.Been curious myself.

I have the Works drop-in filter. Air filtration area would appear a tad larger than K & N. Would not expect any additional gains, if any, on the dyno.

I held 2psi more boost at redline with the HKS filter over the stock box. Ended up picking up 1.5mph in the 1/8th.

I've got the Injen intake and upper pipe kit and it's awesome. Have been using it since 2003 with no troubles. I personally saw a big power difference on the dyno many years ago so I was pretty happy about my purchase. The stock diverter valve made the blow off sound so loud, it was awesome! Later I installed the jdm diverter valve and the shifts were more chrispier and smoother but the blow off sound is not as loud as the stock back diverter valve.

I had a lot of comp surge with the intake on my car. I went back to the stock unit with a drop-in and I'm much happier now.
My vote is for the drop-in.

K&N for just a cheap drop in would be great,BUT if your already gonna do the basics mbc, tbe,fp, you might as well throw in an intake because your gonna need get tuned anyways.
