Well I am on both the M5 forum and this one trying to do research, as far as gas, I have no issue with it, and I like raw cars, I have driven my friends E36 M3 which is one of the most raw cars to drive do to his suspension choices.

evo all the way.... cheaper to fix than a bmw
as stated before bmw = bring money with you.
i've grown up around bmw's all my life but i'd still say evo,

No they are not. Used E39 M5's with moderate miles can go upwards of high 30k. Thats more than a NEW Evo9 MR.
A Used E39 M5 and a NEW EvoX might have similar price bracket.
An M5 can be just as raw as the Evo in terms of performance. He can strip the interior, take out all the fancy electronics and weight. The E39 chassis is no slouch. But you can never make your Evo a luxury/hwy cruiser.
Here is the biggest issue i think you will have between the two cars. The aftermarket for BMW costs at least 100% more than the Mitsubishi aftermarket. Ie, an intake for an evo will be 150 bucks....an intake for a 5 series will be 300 bucks. Adding to that, the M series aftermarket costs another 50% on top of regular bmw's. Don't ask why, it was just more expensive for sometimes no freaking reason. So, ie a M5 intake will cost 400 bucks. I guess they figure, if you can afford a 70k car (new), then you can afford the expensive aftermarket.
Also, upkeep will be very high. If you think keeping the EVO in top shape is expensive, you have no idea what it will be like with the M5.
I used to own a e36 m3, and that is considered to be the cheapest M series to upkeep/own. And so far, it costs about the same as my upkeep in the EVO.
With that said, the EVO will never be a M5 and vice versa. It all depends on what you want out of a car, and what you can afford.

it all depends on do u want to spend a lot of money of servicing the bmw or u can use the money to mod ur evo..I recently traded in my bimmer for a evo and i m loving it. I had to service my bimmer every 5 months and the bill usually surpassed $600. To mention that was just for oil change and to reset the computer.

Its really personal preference like most everyone said. But I do disagree with how bad everyone is bashing the e39 m5 on the road courses. Yes the evo probably could take it on a road course, but, you have to remember that bmws are designed for that. I work at a bmw dealership and the e39 m5 is one of my favorite cars. I chose the evo over an m5 because its an import tuner. I love my little rice rockets (even though hondas are way worse ricers). The m5 will be expensive to mod, and your going to have a lot more aftermarket support for the evo than the m5. So if you like doing the whole japanese modding part and just putting body kits and all kinds of cool nick nacks then get the evo. The m5 is definently a sick car. Its all about what you want and what you will like best though.
