hey man i am ASE certified in A/C.. i have actually seen a compressor lock up and not let a motor start before... its kind of hard to say without looking at it.. but if you cant turn the clutch on the compressor by hand with the car off then i would get a compressor put on it.

Dont newer cars have a break away A/C clutch so it doesn't lock the car up if it seizes?

they are suppose to have somethigtn like that but it depends.. remember alot of parts mitsu uses... they have been using since like the 1700's... the last car i saw that locked up was like a 2003 model... it isnot a big deal alot of times even if the clutch is locked up you can still drive it... but if you turn on the compressor it will make a hell of alot of noise... it is just a big bearing.

Figured I post up seeing I have had some similar AC problems lately 2003 EVO.

if the car is cold, the ac will work, and cool the car off for a while but shortly after when it warms up, When I turn the AC on the cluch grabs and releases. And the car does not cool off.

While driving it also robs a significant amount of power when it tries to turn on, and the car hesitates when the clutch grabs and releases.

I assumed it was the clutch, but the above comments make me think its the compressor, and the clutch is doing its job.

Any thoughts?

I have been driving it with the AC off with no problem if that helps you iziegsx.

Thanks for chiming in man. Well the car is at the garage at the moment and i am being told that the "pulley"( not to sure which part he said) was stuck making the car un drivable. He said that since the evo 8 uses a 1 accessory belt system and the ac pulley wont budge he wouldn't advise to drive the car. I was asking if he could just remove the AC but im realizing that the belt will then be to long. SIGH!!! I went to a company who said they could repair the problem but it seems they want to rip me off. They are trying to charge me $1500.00 to get this problem fixed and says that the car will be down for about 2 weeks. That sounded like a bunch of BS to me so here i did my research spoke to a few people who pointed me in the right direction and it seems i need a new AC compressor and a drier. I found exactly what i needed from an Ebay store namely DiscountACparts I really want my car for the weekend but the chances of that are seeming even slimmer now. The guys that run NO AC in their cars what are the steps that they take as it relates to selecting the correct belt?( being that the belt has to be shorter?) Thanks for all the help you guys provide and have provided to me keep it coming and sorry for the long post.

if anything on your acessory belt freezes up ( a/c compressor, water pump, power steering pump, etc... than your acessory belt is going to resist being turned. since this belt is attached to your crank it makes the motor resist to turn resulting in rough running and stalling on ocassion.

solution-

either take out a/c compressor and lines and get a smaller belt

or get a new compressor

What size belt would i have to get? Is it that easy as just getting a smaller belt? I think i am going to try that for a temporary solution.

that should be ur permanent solution. if u don't use ur A/C that much then u might as well take it out. you may also pick up a few HP becasue of it and also save weight.

u can't just simply get a smaller belt yet because MOST of the time you have to take the AC compressor out of the vehicle before you can put the smaller belt on, otherwise the smaller belt may hit the pully for the A/C

however like in my nissan i was able to put on a smaller belt and leave the compressor in there since it was out of the way.

hope i didn't confuse you but i say GET RID OF A/C. take out compressor, evaporator, condensor, all the lines. A/C never works for that many years n e ways

Thanks. I was a little confused lol but i feel you. So solution for now is:

1) Get rid of the AC compressor
2) Get a smaller belt (what size? :S)

My issue here is with the size of the belt and is it just that easy to get another belt installed do i have to do any minor modifications or anything of such. Im asking as much as i need to as i would love to have my car working tomorrow

is there a write up on this? Anyone ever done it? Im sue to the 2g 4G63 engine which uses about 3 belts excluding timing belt. All assistance is gladly welcomed guys thanks once more.

hm id have to go out and look under my hood but i believe you might be ok with leaving the compressor in there.

here is the link i just googled for you http://www.streettunedmotorsports.co...evo_engine.htm

if u scroll down to the like 15th part thats the belt you need. 35 bucks. you may also try your local parts store. good luck
