EVO Gas Mileage MPG miles per gallon -- Merge
#46
Gas gauge scales typically aren't all that linear, i.e. if the tank holds 14 gallons & it's on a half tank, that doesn't necessarily mean you've used exactly 7 gallons. This varies a lot, had a Corvair years ago (before you guys laugh, one Corvair model was actually one of the 1st turbocharged passenger cars in 1962), it had a really funky shaped tank, 1/2 on the gauge was actually about 3/4 full. Hopefully the EVO gauge is a bit better than that, haven't really noticed. Anyway I'm probably lighter on the throttle than most around here (not that I don't have my moments ), with 800 miles on the car I'm getting about 19 mpg in mixed driving, about what I expected, especially with the engine still fairly stiff.

I usually get from 220-225 miles to the tank, that's with city driving and highway.. Mostly highway miles... But on my trip to Orlando this past weekend, I only got 215 because I was averaging such a high speed the entire way... I'm sure I could've gotten somewhere around 250-255...

I find I average around 19-22.5. I think once so far, I've gotten somewhere over 250 miles on a tank. But like most, I like to "kiss the boost" a fair share. Especially living in flat open country. Long strait roads are my friends.

On my daily commute which is mostly freeway with a few miles of surface streets I usually get between 200 to 210 miles to the tank. Best I've had is when I went on a run one day and got 240 miles before the light came on.
My worst was this weekend, when I had my foot to the floor just about all the time up down some twisty mountain roads - like you I got 80 miles at the half tank stage. I am also using ca 91 **** gas. So only thing I can think is that you sure are driving the Evo hard ??

On a recent 2000 mile highway trip I averaged between 23 and 24 mpg at a pretty consistent 80 to 85mph the whole way... not so great, seeing as how my LS1 Z28 gets 29mpg at the same speed and can go 400+ between fillups on it's 17 gallon tank
If I get into boost alot around town I will maybe get around 18mpg for a whole tank in the EVO, if I stay out of boost and drive conservatively during my day-to-day commute (mixed city and highway) I will get somewhere between 20 and 24 mpg.
I find it a bit weird that I get almost the same MPG in my daily commuting around the suburbs of St. Louis as I do on a pure highway cruise at 80mph across country. The EVO defintely needs a 6th gear to drop the rpms 500rpms or more at 75-80mph!!
Overall, if you stay out of the boost I think the EVO gets pretty decent commuting mileage around town. It's an easy 5 to 10 mpg better than my Z28 in the 'burbs... I can usually get AT LEAST 240 miles out of the tiny 14 gallon tank in my EVO commuting. I find that very acceptable, however it's highway mileage I find sorta unacceptable - I expected 26+ mpg at 80ish, and that does not appear possible with my car. That seriously limits it's highway range, and that plus it's maniac steering and rock hard suspension make it a NOT-SO-GREAT highway trip car.
But it is an incredible suburban commuter, maybe the best commuter fun car I've ever been in or can even imagine! Just save your pennies for an LS1 powered hatchback Corvette or Z28 for long and economical(!) highway trips!!
