How to make a turbo spool sooner??

I have a new evo on the way w/ a 2.4 stroker motor (fully built bored .20 over) with a 37r. Specs etc. aern't important. I was just wondering what makes a turbo spool sooner? More displacement, or does that just get you to boost sooner? Also, what is the most i can rev to on a motor like that?

More displacement helps, its all about how you size the turbo.

You go with a huge 42r and its gonna spool late in the RPMs, go with an FP white and it'll spool quick but you wont have the same topend.

Its all about compromise and finding the right combo that works for what you want.

Alright, thanks..I'm not sure that the lag will be too bad. I don't mind waiting a while for power. Just trying to figure out some ideas incase it begins to bug me. Is the larger displacement (2.4l) worth what you lose up top??

With a 2.4l and a 37r that should be some very good top end.

It might take a while for the turbo to spool but i believe with a 2.4l you can rev rather high so its not much to worry about unless you absolutely hate downshifting to get into the higher rpms

A 2.4 motor cannot be reved very high at all. For example at 7700rpm on a 2.4 your piston speeds are already over 5000. I planned on going with a 2.4 setup but imho it wasnt worth the loss in revs and top end.

cam tuning can yield faster spool. Since you have a IX check out this thread about tuning the cams on the AccessPort.

There are alot of thing you can do to make a turbo spool sooner. As far as how much you can rev your motor safely is at 7600-8000 depending on the specs of the motor.

Rotational mass is the key in getting your turbo to spool sooner, harder and longer. There are alot of power mods you can do such as head work, intake manifold & cams that will show better air flow and help spooling time. Then the last factor is weight the lighter you can get the less pound per hp your car has to move means quicker acceleration which = better times. Follow this simple guild and you wont have to worry about lag which i find if you keep the car above 3000 rpm at all times you wont notice any lag at all.

Ok, well it's not so much that i want the turbo to spool super early. Mostly, I want to have a lot of useable power from the 37r. I'm not sure where full boost kicks in or what rpm it holds to. But if a 2.4l is going to take away from the turbo then I'm gonna try to make it spool earlier to have more usable power. Here are the mods if someone doesn't mind taking a look and telling me how they think this will work.

Full 2.4L RNR built engine with about 13K on it. (replaced at 33k)
Crower rods
Ross Pistons
New Stroker Crank
New 4G64 Block
Mitsu Main & Rod bearings
New Front Cover
New timing belt
New Tensioner

Head has a mild port with a 3 angle
HKS 272's
Mitsu Metal Head gasket

Turbo:
Full Shearer GT37R kit (check out http://www.shearerfab.com/ for specs)

Full 3" TB exhuast
Tial BOV
Buschur Race FMIC
AMS 1200HP fuel kit
Methanol Injection
4" Intake
Full AEM setup Tuned by Shawn Ivey
AEM Wideband
AEM Serial data stream guage
Exedy Triple Carbon Clutch
Fidanza Flywheel

Misc:
Koyo Aluminium radiator
Slotted/dimpled rotors
Metal master pads
Battery is relocated to the trunk
Pioneer head unit
DEFI Boost Guage
Hallman MBC
Perrin Rear Sway bar
Ebiach Lowering springs
All solid motor mounts
HKS turbo timer

heat, air flow and least amount of differential pressure gives you faster spool. Keep the exhuast heat in like heat wrapping you will spool faster.
keep air flow restrictions minimum, you will spool faster
keep the differential pressure from inducer to exducer as small as possible, and you will spool faster. such like increasing VE of motor so it can actually ingest more air instead of having back up pressure slow down the blade.

Exedy Triple Carbon Clutch
Fidanza Flywheel

you cant have the fidanza flywheel becasue the triple carbon comes with a flywheel

You should see full boost by 4000-4800 depending on tune and many other factors.

No one can really pin point when you will get full spool all we can do here is help you get over a bump in a road. You ask how to spool sooner well thats what we helped you with. Only when you drive and tune the car is when you will get your anwsers to your questions.
