Looks like most of us are not having clutch issues. I am fine with 12K miles, mods and all.

Amen to that. Now if the kids would learn not to ride the clutch at stop lights, do 6K drops and generally abuse the car, more and more clutches will mysteriously get better. The poll results point out what I've been saying since day one. Almost ANY mechanical failure (be it brakes, clutches, etc.) that seems premature can be attributed to the driver. This of course excludes the 1-2% that have a genuine warranty issue.

My question is why aren't the sti and s-rt 4 guys having probs if it drivers abusing their machines? Perhaps its the super sticky tires on the Evo combined with the lack of low end torque (below the boost range its just a 2ltr pushing 3,350 lbs after all).

Not every Corvair crashed, did that prove the swing axel safe? Did all of the tires on ther Ford Explorers throw off their tread? The only way to be scientific is to take a representative sample and see what percentage of Evo clutch disks fail compared with the rest of the industry. It is futile to draw conclusions from a poll like this one.

FWIW: I had some difficulties early with under 1000 miles on my car but the subsequent 4ooo miles have been fine. Although I remain skeptical I must comment that the Evo clutch disk and pressure plate have been evaluated by non Mitsu people and found to be adaquate. There are several threads on this site with lots of information.

Most of the STi guys are driving gingerly to avoid detonation and are waiting to get their ECU's reflashed. And I can't imagine an SRT-4 putting the same amount of driveline induced stress on a clutch like an EVO can, plus there are probably more EVO drivers right now. Merely conjecture of course, but possibilities.

Oh yea..forgot to let you know that I have over 6000 miles on my evo and no problem with clutch...yet. Anyway, whoever that mentioned buying an evo for drag/race......IMO, I bought my evo not for that. I bought it because I can if I want to but not strictly for drag/race. It's 30k and yes....I bought it because I can afford it! So why order a steak if you are not going to eat it??? Because I can!!!!

SRT-4 is FWD. Ever driven one? It rips the tires at 1/2 throttle turning in first. If you launch an SRT-4 too aggressively, you'll just spin. Very unlikely there will be a clutch or tranny failure due to launches.

The STi? Well, that's a mystery. Subarus have similar clutches, but there are 400whp WRXes on the stock clutch with over 60,000 miles with absolutely no problems.

My opinion is the restricter and driving are to blame mostly. But there are a really large number of them going. My question is how many of you with failed trannies have owned another AWD car? I think there is a guy with a 3000GT VR-4/Stealth TT that had an early Evo clutch failure, but never on his 3000/Stealth in like 150k. That is kinda scary to me.

I still think the best way for insurance is to not drop it at high rpm at all until this is resolved, unless you want to replace a clutch and go aftermarket very soon.

You don't see these probs with vettes, ta's, ss's, and cobra's and they are just as fast.
Laughable. I don't even have to comment.

The last choice should be no probs after 15,000 or so not just no probs

I have a degree in CJ and a associates in law enforcement, I am well aware of what the law is I have never broke tred in my car. I also don't speed when I do it.

<dumb comment removed>

There is not one law against driving quickly as long as you don't squeel tires or speed and that is what I do. I am studying the law and have for 5 years. So if you can control your gayness we would all appriciate.

well then my evo is in the 1%- 2% of true mitsu messups. As stated mine went out at 2,500 Very minimal abuse, if any. I am sorry if my skills driving are not as good as your guys. you all need to chill.

I was not compare drivetrain I was comparing value, performance, and reliabilty. You could throw in sti, 350z, and many others. those are the flagship sports cars all in the semi same catagory. with similar performance #'s.

I am glad you find that funny that the evo has the worse clutch of all of them.

Don't get me wrong I LOVE my car, but I am dissapointed in MY clutch

My clutch is still good at 2000 (knock on wood) I believe everyone buys their car for different reasons. Let people treat their cars how they want. Consequences will arise depending on how poorly you treat your car.

Sano listen to yourself. What part of "exhibition of speed" you dont understand?

Note to self, stay away from springfield MO.

On a different note, this is the reason why manufacuters dont want to bring high-performance cars in US. Lawsuits and *****in.
