Ok perhapse they had an assembly problem with the clutch to cause the premature ware like what happend to the evo 7?

I have around 9k miles on the OD and it free rev in 3rd gear on..... Any advice on clutches or should i go stock? Thought stock would last the longest

you need a choice for "NO PROBLEMS YET"....

I have over 11,000 (in about 2.5 months!) and the clutch is fine. But I HAVE NOT been to a 1/4 mile track either, and have done no 6k street drops either.

I have come to these conclusions:

A) If you don't race the car, drop the clutch or try any 'stupid' manuevers...your clutch will probably last years...
B) The better you get at driving, the less you will hurt your clutch. I'm running better times and producing less wear on the clutch as I progress. Unfortunately I have already done alot of damage to the stock clutch.

I agree on both counts.

I didnt beleave it myself at 1st. I have been driving a stick shift for 14 years, and coming from a turbo supra,Turbo hondas,8 stick shift cars befor this EVO..
I do not race my EVO (that what my turbo is300 is for) But shince 7k mile i started noticing a little slip on my 2nd,3rd gear. Im at 9k miles just like you are GTR. I just know my cluth is sliping super bad. I will be calling My dealership on monday to get it looked at. IM sure it needs to be replaced. if its cover under warratee i hope it does. But if not then i will be looking for a aftermarket clutch. Why go back with stock when they last only 4 month...?

I've only got, 2500 miles on mine, but no problems with the clutch. I've only launched hard like 4 times.

There are more cases of 'no problems' out there. Remember, people only comment when something goes wrong. It all depends on how you drive.

I've noticed that the Evo needs more of a "clutch slip" to get it going than any other stick car that I have owned (I am talking about getting the car moving during regular driving). The combo of small displacement (lack of low end torque), 4 wheels drive, and unfamiliarity of the Evo causes havoc on the clutch. I think this is one of the main contributors to clutch failure.

What are you people smoking!!! Just accoarding to your poll about 30% have had problems. And the ones that voted no probs = no probs YET. I never launched mine at 6k. I refuse to drive my 30,000 sports car like a vagina. You people who say you never race bought the car for the wrong reason. If a mustang pulls up beside you and wants to race are you telling me you just let it win. And I know for a fact that you can't beat much without some sort of a launch.if you launch less than 4k you will bog, and if you don't launch you lose. Some people may abuse their clutch some don't and they still have new clutchs by 2k. For a 30,000 car thats horrific. You don't see these probs with vettes, ta's, ss's, and cobra's and they are just as fast. And know it does not depend on Just how you drive..

sorry, this rant is for the people who drive thier evo's like ford escort's

Well since, I own a Ford Escort and an EVO, I felt compelled to respond. If you like, drag-racing your EVO from a stop and dumping yopur clutch, all the power to you. However, the EVO is a rally car and that's not its primary purpose. Its designed to to travel on real roads (preferably with lots of curves) at insane speeds. Yesterday, I was cranking down some 2 lane country roads at over 100 MPH..and that made me .

I agree the clutches have some problems, as I have smelled it burn on a slightly higher than normal RPM launce (say 3,000 RPMs or so). Still, I wouldn't want a heavy duty clutch that would be a hard to push down as its a real pain in the *** if you have had leg problems. My Escort has an aftermarket clutch and it is strong and tight (engages really low and quick). You can launch it all day (but after your launch you aren't going to go very fast with those 88 ponies), but it kills my leg after awhile. The EVO's clutch is so light, that I have no problems.

If you want to do a lot of high rpm launches, just replace the clutch with a heavy duty aftermarket one.

Whoever is racing on the street is losing.. err the loser...

Take it to a road racing track and see who wins... Stop with all the hypothetical nonsense and go do it and then lets see what really happens...

Who loses when people launch there cars on the streets like their at a competition, everyone... Don't be a loser.

The winner is the bigger man who takes it to where it belongs and doesn't let peer pressure from an idiot wanting to race on the street make them do what an idiot wants them to.

So mister 2zx3 you just let people blow by you. On the street I never go much beyond the speed limit, but I will smoke someone from a stop light up to the speed limit. The only thing I endanger when I drive is the other fools feelings when I beat him. As for all the its only made for the curves crap is stupid. you have to get the car moving first. I am well aware of what the car was made to do. I also know that for 30 g's the clutch thing should not happen. That is the bottom line.

30,000 = good all around car not, good car with ****y drivetrain.

i know this was not directed at me but yes i would let someone blow by me on the street cause i refuse to race on the street. if they want to goto Atlanta dragway on a friday night and race sure lets go but i refuse to do it on the street.

now that said i would not drag race them anyway. i don't like drag racing. i want an Evo to drive spirtedly on mountian/country roads with many turns. not to drag race people and attempt to inflate my already inflated ego

Funny thing about rallies...they do standing starts...and they do a bunch of them over the course of a weekend. More than your average drag racer or autocrosser too. I wonder how Tommi or any of our other WRC heros would feel if they had to baby their clutches like we do...

As for me, I did some hard launches and a few non-rev-matched 2-1 downshifts at autocrosses and got enough of a hint from the car that I decided I should go into clutch conservation mode and save those manuevers for when it really counts. It's rather disappointing really, but I'm at 6k now and things seem to be holding together, at least for the time being. It is still way too hard though, to be smooth off the line without slipping or bogging, even at normal socially responsible speeds. And I have been driving stick for 25 years or so now, so I know it's not a lack of experience!

If only changing that hydraulic line out wouldn't bump me out of A Stock...
