Sorta had the same problem as the TS, only mine was clutch related and the sales person lied to me to sell the car.

If it's your tranny that's broke you can always try another shop not a dealer but just a normal tranny shop that covers warranties.

Just on a side note, yeah mitsu dealerships suck they are not helpful at all I almost thought about trading in my IX for a X when i went to drop my car off after what happened i know what brand of car I am never buying again.

The tranny broke the same way twice. I was cruising at (very) high speed on the Turnpike and when I got off at the exit, 2nd gear was toast. It would drive in 2nd fine, but would NOT go into 2nd at ANY rpm or from ANY gear without grinding unless I double clutched (clutch in, take it out of gear, release the clutch, then in again, then put it in 2nd, then release the clutch). Not exactly kosher for a performance car. The first time it broke I held the high speed for a few minutes, the 2nd time not only was it slower, but it was only 20-30 seconds.

The dealer said they sent pics to some regional guy who said I abused the car, (which I didn't) and of course made me pay for the 2nd repair! Why the f**k would I buy a car like this that can't be driven at high speeds? I asked for copies of the pictures, which they never produced, so I contacted a lawyer, but that was going to require a $3,000.00 retainer so I just begrudgingly paid $1,875.00 for the repairs.

BUT I GOT THEM BACK

You see, I work for a large A/V installation company that sells Mitsubishi TVs. Well it's all the same company ... sooooooo ... I have just spent the last 4+ years selling Sony, Sharp, and other TVs instead of Mitsubishi every chance I got. I figure I have sold somewhere around 2-300 TVs in that time. Hopefully at least 40 of them could have been Mitsu's, but weren't ... At about $2-3k each, that puts me at 2-3 times the entire purchase price of my car.

What goes around comes around. Sure I still got effed, and in fact it failed a 3rd time a year later, but I sent it to ShepTrans and have absolutely beaten the crap out of it for 3 years and it's still going strong! Don't plan on sending another dime Mitsubishi's way as long as I can help it.

We are soooo lucky in the Dallas/Fort Worth area we have 2 dealers that are very good and both have no problem with us modding our cars. Hell one of them actually puts Buschur parts on cars at the dealer and warranty them. This dealer also hosts some of the Evo meets. However I can certainly feel your pain as I had the same type of problem with my M3. I hope you get this resolved in a positive way. Best of luck my man!!!

over here in Australia we have EXACTLY the same total BS from mitsu dealers.
Particularly 'Australian Motors ' at Wayville in Adelaide.
they are a f*n joke with warranty claims.

Just had my rear AYC diff go toast on me and there is another Evo 9 in there right now, same kms, same year, same mods, with the same problem, has recently been diagnosed as a manufacturing defect in the diff bearings...mine has the same problem, his is approved, mine isnt...
they now want me to PAY them to remove/tear down the diff, send it to a specialist, then 'if' it proves to be a manufacturer defect they will cover it otherwise i will have to pay them $580..
what a joke.

I have had so many problems with dealerships im at a point now where i will just never take it back, and as much as i love my evo 9, never give mitsubishi another dollar in my life.

I would definately have bought an Evo X RS and modified it prior to these experiences, i love how the evo drives, but their dealers' support is a f*n joke and totally puts me off them.

Not happy jan.

good luck though mate keep us updated on the progress. Ultimately you can just take the car home/off the road for a bit and replace all parts with upgraded parts until all the problems are gone, then curse, Curse and CURSE mitsubishi for being complete Asshats...

Where do I start? I bought a 2006 Evo RS with 11k miles on it in stock form about 6 months ago or so. After driving apprx. 2k miles I started to notice a slight syncro crunch shifting into second at redline. I was in denial for a little while because it only did this every so often from 1->2 shifts at redline. Anyway, it eventually started to get worse so I took it into the dealership. After a few trips there I got the tech who was real cool to go drive the car with me. At first it wasn't grinding, but as soon as the car warmed up a bit sure enough 1->2 was crunchin away. He repeatedly said "yeah this definatly isn't right" "ya this definatly shouldn't be doing this". After the test drive he told me he would order the parts, and probably sometime next week have the car dropped off and he could bang out the syncro change in 1-2 days. I was excited and went home with a smile on my face.

1 day later ... I get a call from one of the guys who works at the service desks telling me that he spoke to the "reps" and this is what they said. He basically told me its a 50/50 chance that they are going to take apart my tranny and find a "defective part" that could be replaced under warranty, but if they "did not find anything or saw abuse" it would have to be covered out of pocket. I asked him how this could possibly be because the car is 100% OEM and has never been modified, or raced. He replied "well basically its a racecar so thats the way it is" I told him i'd give a call back but this time i'd like to speak to the tech who went for a ride with me in the car being that i felt like the service desk guy has no idea what was going on.

The same night .. I called up my uncle whos been a head ford tech for over 20 years. I told him the situation with my tranny with the 1->2 shift and how it is grinding and what the dealership told me. I also asked him if it was a "wear item" or if they can try to make me pay money out of pocket for them to drop the trans. He basically told me that what they are telling me is complete BS and not to sign or pay anything. He said that a syncro IS NOT a wear item and if the 2nd gear is going the tranny should be dropped and the syncro should be replaced under warranty period. He said that me signing anythng that said if the tranny is dropped then the $600 just to drop the tranny is on me out of pocket because of any reason is BS. He said that ya, if they drop the tranny and the clutch is causing the issue or something of that nature then yes it is on you but clearly this is not the situation here. I hung up with a smile on my face and was looking foward to speaking to the tech the next day.

Today .. I give the dealership a call and ask to speak to the tech. I get the same service guy on the phone who immediately asks me "so whats the deal" as if i was calling up to tell him to drop the trans. I ask to speak to the tech and he asks why. I tell him because I spoke to my uncle and a few other mechanics who are friends and I have some questions for him. He starts telling me that "its the way it is" and that the "car is a race car" and "generally they dont warranty anything on race cars" ... at this point im starting to lose my patience with this guy and ask again to speak to the tech. He tells me to hold on and i hear mumbling in the backround. I hear people saying "this is the way it is going to be" and "I dont want to get involved" ... 2 minutes later he comes back on the phone and tells me that the tech isn't available at the moment but if I had anymore questoins I can ask him. So i asked him how its possble for them to tell me that i am going to have to pay out of pocket to drop my trans when the issue is clearly a warranty item and the car still has a full warranty in tach. He once again explains to me that "the car is a race car" and that he just has to go by what the "reps" say. I tell him that at this point I feel like I am being f*cked around and im getting annoyed and will be contacting the corporate office. He gladly tells me I may due so and asks me if I have anymore questions and I tell him no and to have a nice day and I hang up.

I'm calling the corp office in 5 minutes and will update this thread by later on tonight.

FYI, i had warranty work the first time around and my dealer said the same thing. You have to guarantee the labor for removing the transmission to inspect (just in case) because they do NOT know anymore than you do until the transmission is out and they open it up. I just signed it. Sure enough a Mitsu factory rep came out and inspected the transmission once out/open. He confirmed my 5th gear synchro and poor shifting was due to their own Mitsu TSB regarding the 3-4 shift fork (which is known to fail) and the pos 5th gear synchro. All replaced and i didnt pay a dime... the 2nd time around.. same thing happened, i guaranteed yadda yadda... but the Mitsu rep said i broke it from abuse(possible...) and since it was out of pocket, i just decided to have Sheptrans do a performance rebuild on it instead for the same cost! So yeah, basically it can go both ways man... but they cover themselves w/ you guarantee'n the labor.

gotta love don herring and lewisville mitsu!!! lewisville mitsu actually gives you 30% off if your a north texas evo club member.. and 15 % off labor!

but about the shelby only warranting the gt for 12/12,000 i can understand.. but if mitsu says you have a 5 year warranty 50,000 miles.. and the car ahsnot passed that.. it is legally under warranty.. its mitsus damn fault for giving a racecar such a long warranty

Whoa, when I bought my IX in Mar 06 the dealership was selling them with 10yr 100k mile powertrain warranties. Doubt they'd honor it though.

As long as u have a stock clutch they should cover it.

My fifth use to grind and I took it to the dealer. The car was 100% stock at the time they said they will have to drop the tranny and then they can tell me if they will warranty. They basically pulled out my trans and saw that I had a stock clutch so the fixed it for no problem.

But same dealer voided my transmission warranty 6 months later after I broke it and I told them I had a upgraded clutch over the phone. They had my vin number so they basically just automatically voided my trans warranty over the phone.

Take the car in .... have them fix it no matter what they say. If you are forced to pay something use a credit card and instead of signing your name right under warranty on the receipt. Then dispute the charge.

Odds are it will be covered under warranty though. There are loads of cases just like yours and 99% are covered.

I am not saying you shouldn't get your problem fixed under warranty, but if you are hard on the car, you should be prepared to pay for stuff when it breaks.
I totally agre with what you said. Not everyone beats their cars up(like the gentleman that opened this topic) but at the end of the day we know people buy the Evos for what is made for(spirited driving).
