Thumbs down 03 EVO VIII problem with heater control knob

Hey Community--

I was just wondering if any other 03 EVO VIII owners have had a problem with there a/c control knob on the left side. It has always been kind of tough to turn and then last week the knob completely broke off and along with some of the internal parts. I went to the dealer and they told me that it would cost like $360 to replace the enitre heater control unit because i couldn't just buy the parts seperately. You can buy the fan knob (the middle one) seperately but you can't by the other outer knobs because they are connected to the entire unit. Soo.. has anyone had this same situtation? and where did you go to replace the parts? I think that this is a problem with the 03 Evo VIII.

Thanks for the input!!!

Nicole

This always happens with the lancers also (being the same parts as the evo 8,9)
You can just go to a junkyard and pull it off any lancer there from 02-06

This is a very well known problem. You can get all of the replacement parts from mitsubishiparts.net for a little over $100 I believe. There is a vendor on here, his name is RusselM or something like that. Search for him and he can qote you a good deal on it from mitsubishiparts.net

+1 for a stiff knob. I'm always just super careful when adjusting it.

My knob just started acting up too, so I just ordered a link and lever replacement kit (P/N 7801A110) from MitsubishiParts.net. Cost was $21.56 (includes S&H). Dealership wanted $24.00, and wanted me to come in and pre-pay for it. Having said that, when I install the new one, anyone have any thoughts on what kind of lubricant I should use?

For those that are having the stuck problem, you may want to get under the dash (above the accelerator pedal) and jiggle the "link and lever" while turning the heater knob. Not a long-term fix, but not a bad option either on those really cold days.

I don't remember where I read it but at some point I printed off a TSB about this and the dealership should have done a warranty replacement for you. Obviously Mitsu isn't going to volunteer that information but if you do a search I am pretty sure it's there.
