Actually it's pretty simple. If you look some of the cells in the 7-panel display remains on all the time. This is why the numbers look funny...cause some of the cells never turn off.
Sounds like some shorts on the clock board, forcing those cells on. I bet if you pop the clock out and brush off the board with a toothbrush (no paste!) it will work again.
