In my old car, you could just simply pull the fuse for the gauges and no miles would report. Also, no other gauges worked as well so it is not really a smart idea.

So how hard is it to swap? I'm swapping an EVO8 cluster into my 9 because I'm ditching the ACD. And I want the EVO8 cluster to match my current one. Anyone?

Nevermind, answer by me below.

Couple screws..

Remember, If you have yearly inspections, the mileage is recorded. If there is a mileage discrepancy, the car will be worth less.

Well, I pretty much just answered my own question. If you look at the main circuit board for the cluster, you can see a chip on the back with the conductors going to the digital display. So, I figured, if I'm gonna do this swap and keep my mileage legit, I need to reuse that board. All in all, I was pleased as I didn't have to do much. I compared an 03 VIII board to a IX board and the only thing different were the three ACD LED's on the board. The VIII board has provisions for the LED's, they just arent there. Anyhow, you do not need to take the needles off or anything. Steps are this:

1. Remove clear lens by just pushing on the tabs.
2. Remove black gauge surround panel as well by pushing on the tabs.
3. Remove the phillips screws that hold the back panel.
4. Remove the phillips screws that hold in the circuit board.
5. Carefully lift the circuit board directly up away from the speedometer. (You want to make sure it gets removed straight up otherwise you can crack the little tabs that hold the odometer display to the chip. Do not pry one side up and than the other, do it evenly and work at it, you will get it).
6. Repeat this for the other speedometer.
7. Simply swap the circuit boards.
8. Reverse the procedure to reassemble.

With the circuit board removed, I removed the three LED's from the board with a soldiering iron. This way there will not be some green glow from behind the tach. And my mileage will be legit because I used my original circuit board with the Evo 8 gauge cluster.

taaadaaaa ! the end of the day his phone rang and he promptly went over and picked up his $$$$ and dropped the car off to the ripoff artist.

In the end it all worked out, he got his $$$ back and now he said he wont be jumping into another evo without fully checking it out.
