If you can reproduce this issue with a normal battery, than its likely your alternator. Thats what Id try if I were in your position (no energy diagnostic tools). The battery stores energy for start up. There could be a faulty cell inside, but it sounds like a intermittently faulty voltage regulator part of your alternator.

I'm no expert when it comes to electrical either, but... But have you checked the grounding? Could be a loose grounding wire. With it being inconsistent, it's possible it's the battery but I would be more suspect of grounding.

thanks for the opinions...I only posted this thread for ideas before I start testing things and what not
just wanted to see if anyone else made have had a similar issue

I ordered a battery relocation kit and I'll get that done in a few weeks and see if that cures my issue
