Yep, that has been my path over the past 7 years or so. Having most recently gone from a 2005 STi to an 2008 335i and now driving an evo9mr...
I truly appreciate what the evo offers against both those vehicles. Stock for stock...
335i vs evo9mr: well yes you can't beat the massive torque and raw power of the 335. But it felt like I was an old man driving in a cocoon. Muted steering, lurchy paddle shifting (the manual felt like shifting in jello so I thought I'd give the tiptronic a try.... not so much). 335i felt much bigger and nowhere near the handling of course.
sti vs ev09mr, well, low end power is all I give the sti. There is no way in my opinion to get the sti handling to the evo level. I tried... with coilovers, etc. Nothing came close. The evo feels so much tighter, steering super quick. I do give the STi the tranmission advantage. Shifting feels much better and more solid. I actually worry about the evo 6 spd tranny.
So my take. Yes I will miss the comfort and raw power of the 335i. The STi I do not miss at all. The EVO is plain and simple the most exhilarating drive. Super tight steering, smooth acceleration, closest I could get to driving a kart to work. This is pure driving. Twitchy steering keeps you alert, perfectly balanced handling (with Zeals and with current bilstein/Swift springs). Many of my friends think I have gone nuts in ditching my 335i to drive this... but as I get behind the wheel, mash the gas pedal, and slide through a turn with perfect balance... skeet skeet skeet...

I'm actually thinking about jumping ship to an e92. Then I realized with the .92 lag issues, bad fuel pumps and countless 328 and 335 with women driving them, nothing beats the evo!

STi doesn't shift better than MR, the shifting is so notchy compare to MR 6 speed.
STi has lowend b/c the turbo is smaller, not so much to do with the 2.5 L, I drove my friend's upgrade turbo Sti and I thought it suppose spool up fast with 2.5L, but it didn't.
335, I don't like them b/c they are faster than evo and they like to mess with evo, they think they are the fastest thing.
b/c BMW knows they can't use NA to compete with turbo so they went to the turbo route.
for those went to 335 from evo, it's disgrace to evo community.

I completely agreed. I know a lot of people live and die by the philosophy that they will not consider a "sedan" a sports car. Obviously those people have never driven an Evo. When you drive it, you'll understand why people who owns 911 C4S, 335i, and other more expensive cars enjoy the Evo much more. There is the story of a guy who sold his 911 C4S and a race prepped M3 after driving an Evo 9. And he was proud of it too
