Definbitely close the recirc button on the A/C right as you start the car. I only smell things when I'm sitting in traffic or if I give it some gas and then have to stop right away. But driving normally I don't smell anything.

I had a very small exhaust leak and had the same problem. Take a piece of paper and put it near all the joints of the exhaust system, if the paper starts vibrating, you have an exhaust leak there. It should be pretty obvious with a piece of paper rather than just using your ears and eyes.

Just go to Autozone and buy their exhaust sealer stuff. Comes in a little container and just put it on the flanges and let dry. It will create the best seal so exhaust gas in not leaking through your vents. Used it as a last resort on the v-band back housing to a friends Supra cause the v-band was bent and surprisingly, it worked perfect.
