Uh...this stinks. I really want to use the harness bar for a camera/video mount as well as adding some structural benefits. Why do they even sell the padding material then?
They sell the racecar padding because A. it looks good, B. you won't bump your head when getting in and out without a helmet. C. it won't scratch the $2000 paintjob on your helmet and D. it offers some minor protection on in an impact where the driver is wearing the helmet.

P.S. screw the passengers. pull out the backseats.

the harness bar alone is a DEATH TRAP in your car (lord forbids) your car turns over or a serious accident. its a decapitation waiting to happen. if you get the harness bar you'll also need the roll bar as well.

Glad someone finally mentioned this , though I'd disagree with "D." That foam is worthless in an impact. You will squish it down and hit the bar with nearly full force, just like it wasn't there. Take a look at the FIA roll bar padding available. That will actually absorb some ikmpact during a crash, but its intended to soften the impact of helmet-to-roll bar contact.

Short answer is, keep passengers out of the back while the bar is in there.

You beat me to it. The solution is to carry the extra passengers in the trunk. Which brings up the issue of what to do with the spare tire.

easiest way around this, either put the padding or no rear passengers.

1. remove rear seats. (no pasangers to hurt)
2. if rear seats will stay. buy some 4 point racing harness also for the back seats, so they won't go to the front in case of inpact.
3. if there is no money for such project, forget about everything and keep your stock seatbels

There isn't any way to make this setup safe, padding won't help at all. As others have stated remove the rear seats completely if you have a cage and possibly even the harness bar. This will eliminate people saying "hey, it's just a short trip let me pile in".

When I had my 8, I had everything from the driver's seat back removed and I installed an Autopower 4 point cage. Honestly, I'd be scared to run 4 point harnesses without at least a hoop or half cage in the car...so harness bars for me aren't even an option.

Hey its better than flying through the middle and on through the front windshield right?

But i wouldnt take people in the backseat if your going over 80+ mph

if you are then surround it with a polyethylene foam cylinder *under $20*
This logic is very very wrong... I'm not sure of the exact numbers, but if I remember from Physics classes if your car is travelling at 60mph and you hit another car travelling at 60mph, the forces involved in the collision would roughly triple your body weight (I know the numbers are probably wrong but you get my drift). Holding onto the bar tightly will probably just injure them more and most likely break their arms.

Collisions at 20mph can be just as dangerous...so if you're not "planning" to do more than 80mph it doesn't matter.

Theres a reason this isn't for street use. I believe you can mount your harness use the latches for a baby seat... I believe cause i've seen harnesses w/o a harness bar.
