To prevent the lift points from ending up that way, don't use those lift points. Pretty much any low profile floor jack can reach the pseudo frame rails just inside the factory lift points. Those frame rail things take a bit of a beating but with the right pad on the jack, it doesn't hurt them at all.
I got a steel/aluminum low profile floor jack from HF that reaches the front lift point with no problem. It has an 18" extended height and cost me 115 bucks I think. It's high enough that you can lift the car, put it on stands, and slide the tranny out the side which, in place of a lift, is about all you would need a jack for.

2x4 for me too, if i want to get to the front center jack point i first jack up by the tire, then hold it up with a stand then put the jack in position for the front center point

I was just watching Tropic Thunder and immediately thought of "Simple Jack" when I saw this thread.
But yeah if yo have to use a 2x4 as a cushion, BUT be careful. I did that once and the 2X4 brok and the jack slipped and the car fell a good 4 inches. The rear window shattered and the jack nearly went through the bottom. Huge bump in the front seat foot area. Luckily this was not in my evo.
