If you are going to do black I'd suggest powder coating it black wrinkle. I went thru this delima a couple months ago cause mine was scratched. Decided againts black cause I wanted it to stand out. I couldn't think of a better suited color than stock so I just made it pop a bit more. I painted it Kandy Apple Red. It looks killer in the sun, but its kinda hard to get the effect in pictures.

V/C removal is fairly easy. I reccomend cleaning it good with degreaser & taping off the bottom to keep any oil from getting on the surface & ruining the job. Thanks for the comment on my skillz, I do minor bumper & wheel repair so I get plenty of practice painting.

i did mine that way and painted the cam cover in a "cast iron" grey color so it doesnt look monotonous and goes along with some of the original engine parts colors.
my fiance has the camera so i snapped this after reading your thread with my crappy 1.3 meg samsung i-760. LOL
*its wrinkle black and aluminum liek you were talking about and then i used a small cloth and acetone to remove the paint off the letters and they are just showing the original black through.
