Turn on and tune in...

One of the factory reps visited our dealership while
I was off saying that he had completed some seat time
in the Evo. I can't believe I missed him. Anyway, in light
of some of the other posts I've been reading I probably
wouldn't repeat much of anything he might have told me, until
I could witness it first hand or see it on some sort of
official documentation.
Luckily, my used car manager went to bat for me and asked
what he thought were critical questions. However, he isn't
as technical and fanatic about the cars like we are on this forum.
One thing he did say was that they were working on the Evolution commercial right now, and they are planning on airing through some major event, akin to the Superbowl spot they did some years back for the Montero Sport. I don't know if that meant they're going to wait until next year's superbowl, or maybe do something much earlier to drum up excitement for it. But it is going to be big, even more so then the Outlander launch which is actually going to be a more lucrative product for them. That's it, that's all I have - no, intercooler placement, no turbo sizes, no GDI Mivec diesel twincharger induction story. Just a
commercial.

How would you shoot a spot to announce the arrival of the most
influential product to ever hit the US automotive market?
I see a dark screen slowly filling with thumbnail images of closeups
of the Lancer's parts, maybe an engine shot, a wheel rebounding
over a rough surface and so on. In the background there's this
Japanese women's choir singing some kind of hymn, and at the end
you there's this big bass drum hit and the screen fades to black again
with real Japanese kanji that morphs into "Evolution: coming to America."

Anyway, that's the way I see it. Whatever they do it's going to be
bad ***.

I don't think it matters how they advertise it. It's gonna be a sell out either way.

I'm sure Deutsch Inc is the company in charge of marketing the Evo, since they've been responsible for all of the recent MMSA marketing. So if anyone knows someone who works there, bug 'em for details.

Deutsch Inc., eh? I think I'll apply for a job there. I want to do the music for THAT commercial. After that, I'll quit.

I don't see a reason for to advertise during the superbowl. I mean, it's not like the car itself needs plenty of advertisement, specially with the limited amount of Evo's they are sending over to the states.

Umm...the way the Mitsubishi ads have been going lately, it's probably going to be a bunch of 20-something hipsters in the car acting like a bunch of jackasses while some obnoxious pop song plays in the background. My guess would be Chumbawumba's "Tubthumper" or something along a similar vain. Arghh! Curse the Mitsubishi marketing department!

That whole ad makes look cheesy. The radio ads are really obnoxious too, give me gun so I can shoot them idiots in the PR dept.

Well Mitsubishi is having record sales in the US, and the whole company has finally become profitable after 3 years thanks in part to the success they are having in the US. So I think those annoying commercials have helped immensely.

Actually, there seems to be a bunch of contemporary pop songs in car commercials recently. The only two I really liked was one that used that Mazzy Star song, I can't seem to remember...and the other was the Nissan Frontier that used Stone Temple Pilots' Wicked Garden. Almost made me want to go out and buy a truck. I have to admit though, that Lancer commercial gets me pumped for some odd reason...

I like the music for the Mini commercials. There have been in past a couple of BMW ones too that I liked.

I vote for an Acura commercial a few years back for good music. It was just an instrumental and showed all of Acuras cars, but it gave me the chills.

I would think that the Soccer World Cup Final would be an event worth of the Evolution commercial. This is probably one of the biggest TV events ever and the Superbowl just seems tiny and unworthy compared to the WC final. But hey that is international and the americans don't like soccer, so maybe it is not THE event. Let's wait and see!!!

MTV Video Music Awards?

A while back, someone also said that there would be a commercial during the Superbowl.

Evolution...what?

Okay, so our rep says there will be a Superbowl
commercial for the Evolution. Now wether or not that will
be the first time it will air, he didn't say. But what he did
say is that our car will represent more or less what the
EVO 8 will be for the rest of the world, and that ours will
just be "Evolution" no number at all. And to me,
from a marketing standpoint, that makes a lot of sense. It
wouldn't confuse any of us, but to come out with "the 8th"
version of car in its premier year in the United States might
make those who are unfamilar with the car even more
confused. I can see myself trying to explain to an ignorant
prospect why a 30,000 Lancer has a 4 cylinder engine when
it is clearly marked "8" or "VIII" on the back. And then also if the car
is still in production five years from now, why an Evolution XIII
wouldn't be so great from a marketing standpoint either. At any
rate, the target price is still under 30, and its looking like 5000
units per year, with a January release.
