Evo top end?
Is anyone else a little bit disapointed with the evo's top end acceleration?
I absolutely love my evo down low.. my friend has an s4 and i can usually smoke him pretty good. but if we are on the highway, at say 60, and i punch it, i dont stand a chance against the s4.. or most bmw's for that matter.
I know im gonna get a lot of flame replies about how " thats not what the evo is made for- its a rally car" but come on- lets face it? who of us here in the US, really goes rally racing or offroading with it?
wish it had more torque for high end performance...

nah, im dropping it into 3rd or 4th- depending on speed. just those damn v6's are too fast top end. maybe a little higher speed- 75-80 ish.. the acceleration just isnt there.
what can be done to get better top end?

Your EVO's top end should be just as quick with an S4 maybe faster. When I had a WRX with just MBC set to 14.5lbs boost, I only lost to an S4 like 2 to 3 cars top end over 100. From the dead stop, its really drivers race til about 90mph. My EVO's top end feels very strong. Some people seem to complain about power loss after 5K rpm but I'm really not seeing that with my EVO. It pulls hard all the way to readline and its completely stock. You should be faster then an S4 all the way around because our cars dont weigh as much and has more power.

You are right, look at a stock dyno chart and you will see the evo dies after about 5500. I had a NSX and it dynoed peak power @ 7700, we need to get the evo's peak power around 7,000ish and have it climb all the way there. I think it will get there with a few mods.

I agree dat it doesn't pull as much at top.... I don't think theres really a way to fix it as much unless we go with a bigger turbo..... the stock turbo is made for mid range power.....
I've raced a slightly modded z28 camero and altho I beat him he started to pull on me near the end of the race (end of 4th)...

you are right though, from the dead stop- i have him all the way until about 80 or 90.
but im talking about if we are already on highway doing 70-80 and punch it-- we dont have the ballz top end!

JaReDbOy is right, evo's top end is a little weak especially on 4th. a 350Z could pass an evo at high speeds. Maybe the powertrain hp losses are more significant at those speeds. Acceleration means little.. Gearing also plays a big part. For example, the E36 M3 US spec engines are only 240hp vs 320hp euro spec. but they accelerate just as quick at 5 sec 0-60. I've experienced evo top end with many cars. For non-believers, try getting a friend with a stock 350Z and accelerate from 60-120mph, you'll see what i mean. Another possibility to having a weak top end could be displacement...i don't know. But i've been surprised by cars with worse stats than the evo, for eg the mustang 5.0 GT, camero ss etc.
