I was 22 when I got mine. Turning 25 this weekend hoping for an insurance drop lol. I don't know if I would start with an evo though... Its like riding the biggest roller coaster at the park first thing, the rest of your driving life is going to be a disappointment lol. I'd say tool around in a base lancer for a couple years and then upgrade. Just to really appreciate it, that's my .02

I am 31 and bought my 06 evo about 6 months ago with no mods but a cf hood. I've spent a few grand in performance goodies and a tune. It is a very addicting hobby!!! Good luck and be safe.

Word to the wise the glass is expensive and can be hard to get...Mitsubishi uses special lightweight glass on the car. Try your best to find used parts on the internet. As for cost of ownership you gotta be ready to shell out ~600 a year on tires, 200 on Brake pads, I do about $200 worth of oil changes a year (My DD), and still have some money set aside just incase. Spend some time reading around this forum to get a good idea of what you may be getting yourself into.
i bought mine from a friend CASH! 24k 2006 evo 9 with 18,000 miles on it year and a half ago. Which was really cheap then. Dont listen to the glass comment. We over at socalevo.net just had a bug discussion about this. The glass that the lancer uses has the same part number ans evo glass. Everyone was comparing how much to get there glass fixed. There was one company that has the smae company as mercedes OEM glass and it was like $160 installed for a windshield. I paid $100 installed for a passenger window.

You'll crash it, kill yourself, and drive up the rest of our insurance premiums. I really do recommend you get a lesser car for your first one and wait until you're a bit more mature for an Evo so you don't become another statistic.

What are you talking about? No brakes are quicker/easier to change than the Evo's Brembos!

Oh yeah, I bought mine when I was 25 (I am 27 now) after owning 5 or 6 DSM's and a Honda S2000.

yeah, i wasnt talking about the ease of installation. I was talking about the $500 for decent rotors and $200 for decent pads. I went with my friend to help him fix his srt-4. $23 each rotor!
oh and i know you are very young so your insurace will be high. i dont think being an evo makes it alot. I aoid more for my vw gti when i was younger for the same coverage. Now im 27, never had a ticket and i pay $103/month for full coverage. I asked my friend who sells insurance ( no i dont get mine from her) and she said being awd makes it cheaper. Its true, i called about an audi before and they gave me the rate, then they said wait is it the quattro i replied yes and the rate went down big time.
