I picked up a mint '05 engine complete for $2500, and sold off everything I didn't need (turbo/mani, TB, intake mani, coils...) for like $1k. The car came with an IX turbo, which I sent out to be converted to a BBK Lite while I was rebuilding it. So for around $12k, I've got a real nice 400whp pump gas setup. Not to mention I learned alot about the cars and how they compare to DSMs to work on.
Nice job on that project. You came out on top for sure

its cheaper to buy it with a good motor, if you dont you will spend more even if you do your own labor.

Just understand that the Evo is one of the most modded and abused tuner cars on the planet! If you find a nice condition interor/exterior Evo for under $10k, then it may be worth it. With a known bad motor you can plan to spend at least $2500 to do a stock motor swap. And if the drivetrain parts are bad then you can plan on investing a $2k+ to replace them with used parts. And that just the start....suspension components could be messed up ect. ect. How do I know this? Ive done it. I expected it to be easier than it was, however, Im happy with the result for the most part.....
