The EVO manual says this..
The manual for my audi S4 (twin turbo V6) says this, as do other manuals I have read.
With all that said, I usually start the car, wait for about a 45 seconds to a minute (or till the temp gauge starts moves), then drive gently till the engine is at operating temperature.
The engine is warmed up enough for driving when the coolent temp gauge starts to move....A longer warm up period will only consume extra fuel.
To avoid unnecessary engine wear and to reduce exhaust emission, do NOT let your vehicle stand and warm up......

The first thing I do when I get in the car is start it - after that I close the door, buckle up, plug in my iPod, etc. In the winter I then scrape the windshields. When that's done I start off, usually the car's been idling between 30 to 60 seconds (up to 3 minutes in the winter). I then drive gently until the temp gauge is at it's normal position.

Excessive warming up is not a good thing for an engine. Excessive idling is not good for any engine. The key, when starting cold, is to start and give the engine enough time to get the oil circulating (30-60 seconds), then you start driving and keep the RPMs low until the car is at least halfway to operating temp. 5 minutes of warmup is excessive, and unnecessary.
The X MR actually has safeguards in place for all this. If you put the trans in Sport or S-Sport, the rpms stay low and shifts are early until the engine temp goes up. I used to complain that I didn't have a temp gauge on the MID all the time, until I realized the tranny has this feature. Now I just put it in sport mode and drive until the shift points change. Then I know it's ready.

I let min sit until the idles starts to change then I drive "easy" until the idle smooths out more.
It warms up MUCH quicker after installing a downpipe.
It prob isn't a good thing though :-p When normal temps come back around though and I'll wrap the downpipe then.
