Your tuner and You.
i have done all the work to my car(except machine work) i picked out all my parts after reading and reading about all the different ones. so now i am at the point where i have to trust someone to put their knowledge into my car to put it to its fullest most potential. i understand a shop is out to make money so a guy who drops off his car and gives you a budget(or doesnt) they would come first over someone paying for just a tune and probally a head ache. So now i am at a stand point with my car. im going into the bigger numbers and am going to need some work done. i dont know how to trust a shop with my car. Everytime i have brought a car of mine somewhere im always thrilled just to get my car back and what they did was either HORRIBLE or i had to go home and spend another week fixing what they did work to.
The tuner now has complete control of how your car will function and that to me is a huge deal i know im only paying for an hour or 2 worth of your time but thats the final result of my car.
this must be a how a girl feels sleeping with a guy for the first time. all thous choices but you can only choose one.
i dont want suggestions of a shop to go to. i want to know how YOU chose who tunes/works on your car and why.
is it they have the same set up in their race car?
did they answer the phone when you had a stupid question while working on your car?
their shop is kept really clean?
what?

I went to AWD Motorsports originally and had a great experience. I moved to Orlando and had another tuner tune it and I was miserable, so I brought it back to AWD when I went back to south Florida.
Changing tuners was a big mistake!

As a costumer, this is what I expect from my tuner:
1. First and foremost, I expect him to hear and understand my needs. When I say that drivability and reliability are of paramount importance, I want the car tuned in such a manner.
2. Reflecting on point 1, when a tuner suggests parts, I want him to remember what it is that I'm after. I don't want to hear about any underhood bling that won't give me ****, parts that will compromise drivability regardless of the gains, or parts that won't even yield a 5hp on my setup. After talking to me, I expect the tuner to know that I will only buy parts that fit as the factory intended. If my car leaves with a buzz or a rattle, boy am I not happy!
3. I expect to be dealt with in a professional manner. If competence and the attention to detail aren't there, most everything else loses relevance. I don't mind paying a fair fee for any kind of work, and I expect the work to be performed on a factory-like level - no missing bolts/brackets, everything torqued to spec, etc. At the end, if the car leaves not looking exactly as it arrived, I'm not happy, which brings me to point 4.
4. I expect my car to be treated like a Vayron that just rolled in for service. I don't want to cringe when someone rubs against my paint and I don't want someone's shoes scarping the interior plastics. It boils down to respect for individual property.

The tuner in my sig is more of a friend than a tuner. He never called himself a tuner, and doesn't try to sell me anything. He's tuned tons of locals in the tri-state area, and I havent' heard anything bad. I really feel that it comes down to how much you trust the person. My tuner is always just a phone call away, never tries to sell me a product, listens and answers all of my questions, and was never an if, and, or but kind of guy. Its not easy finding someone you can trust, but it worth it never having to second guess the guy. Also, having other people say your car feels really good is great feedback too...
I will add that customers should not go to tuners, whether good or bad, without a working knowledge of how tuning works. Try to do some research and have at least an idea of what's involved. Know things like AFR, etc... Good Luck!

I've used Tamer aka 4WS for multiple tunes and retunes for the last 3 years (he was actually the first guy who tuned my Evo) and I have nothing but positive stuff to say. I actually am using him right now for my 35R tune. I chose him because his feedback on the forums and how well he did the first time. The first time it was a crap shoot, I was new to the game. This time it's because he's proven himself
If I were to go with another road tune I would go back to KevinD as he road tuned my Evo last time. The only reason I'm not using him again is because he's more than twice as expensive and for an e-tune I couldn't justify the cost

Chose a shop from this forum near your location. Probably going to have to make a Friday night/Sat morning road trip but I'd rather take a trip to someone that is an Evo specialist and has tuned 100s/1000s of Evos such as Buschur.
I have reached the same predicament as you, I research my own parts and do my own work as well, like many on this board, but when it comes time to tune I've put too much time to second guess the tuner so even though I have one of the most reputable shops 45 minutes away from me (Chicago), which I have bought a good amount of products from, I will plan a weekend to drive to Buschurs.
**I prefer tuning to be done on a mustang dyno and who would not want the godfather of DSM's/Evo to tune their car, you know it will be done exactly how you want it and you'll probably learn more than you can remember in a day, this is all personal preference of course.

Don't know how far from PA you are, but if you can get to CBRD, you'll be good to go
PS: To answer the poll, no one other than myself and CBRD are allowed to touch my car... period.
