Well, my comp boot time will be 10seconds roughly, so boot time: not a problem. I believe the direct pressure of placing the servos on the flaps would require more torque. Im using 6 servos for simplicty, and as for not having a/c or fan until it boots up (it will be on your last setting when the cars started.)

Im not planning on rebuilding the a/c unit, just place servos in place of what your hand would do. (simple; might be horrible in the end, but why not give it a shot). I dont want to go through alot of extra stuff if the easy way will work

Your going to have to use 1/4 scale servos to get the torque you need.. And you definitely don't need servos for anything but the Air mix.. the fan switch is a rotary binary switch.. and the others are momentary or dpst pusbuttons.. you can provide reference signals by using a microcontroller and a debounce circuit.

Aww man. You stole my idea!

Let me know how it goes - I will be doing the same thing.
Right now I am getting the interface programmed right and proper. The servo control is being done via serial and an OOPICII-R servo control board.

Not alot has been done lately on it (friggen cc debt) but work goes on none the less.

Also 1/4 scale servos are not a neccessity - standards are strong enough.

*edit* Damn forgot to mention the coolest feature I plan on implementing. If all goes well I will also have servo control over the 4 vents in the dash. (left/right : up/down : open/close) Can we say occilating vents

haha, that's a good idea Smith.
I'll be interested on how you fit the servo and linkages.

I believe the direct pressure of placing the servos on the flaps would require more torque.
This depends on what the cable attaches to. Remember that the cable simply translates displacement from one end to the other, it has no force multiplier. If at the other cable end, it is attached to a control arm and a few different ratio gears, then there is a force multiplier. But if we leave any gears alone and attach the servo to the control arm, or even replace the control arm with the servo (more usable torque this way), then the torque needed will be the same as if the cable was in between the two.

I have to say that I'm working on this project too. I'm using an Atmel uC plus an IC thermostat that will create a fully automatic climate control system. All the knobs and switches will remain the same unless I replace them with rotary switches. Trying to think how to integrate the 4x20 LCD display. Also plan to add some additional security features if I have extra MIPS to spare.

The vent idea is definetly pretty cool. Id imagine it have some presets? as well as custom move for each vent? Nice add on!
