That's right, come to Colorado in the springs and go up Pikes Peak. There are a ton of other mountain roads to take as well.

You must have a pretty good job to allow you 2 months for vacation.

Haven't driven on the Pacific Coast Highway, but looking at some pictures and videos of parts of that highway it looks stunning.

There will be plenty of flat boring interstate between the good places to drive. So, the first thing I would do, if planning a trip like this, is to install cruise. I will also save you from the cops.

I was just about to suggest this area. I went there this summer on a roadtrip with 2 of my friends to visit an old friend; very nice area. Good roads, 15+mph speeding ticket is $20. XD

Also take Highway 2 out there, amazingly straight long road, no cops. Set the cruise at 95 haha.

Around/near the Great Lakes is great. My wife and I have driven around Lake Superior, Lake Michigan, and Lake Huron so far. You'll have to come through Texas too

hey thanks everyone for the input! i'll definitely try to hit up as many places as possible.
i will be making frequent stops (at least i hope so) so i wont have to drive long hours at a time all the time. and the only reason i get to take this 2 month vacation is cuz i quit my job! ample free time ftw!

I just did the Chicago/ Portland drive, and my advice is if at all possible avoid Iowa and Nebraska. Wyoming wasn't too bad. Also, most of the midwest serves 91 octane fuel so get your tune dialed in appropriately. If the pacific NW is on your route send me a pm and we can organize a welcoming committee.

I've done from California to Maine and back twice now, there are some pretty fun roads through Tennessee and Arkansas. I really liked parts of Texas in Arizona too because the roads were so smooth and straight, plenty of opportunities to run flat out.

This is number one. on my list..
Yep - The Tail of The Dragon at Deal's Gap is the best driving road in the US, hands down. You have to see it.

Being that you are already starting in Chicago, you could take the classic Route 66 all the way to LA. Any great road trip around the US has to hit New Orleans, Vegas, LA and then drive HWY. 101 up the coast as far as you can. There are also some good driving roads over by the Mississippi river up near Debuque, if you are in that area. But if the trip is about driving you simply cannot miss the dragon.

Have fun - that will be a once in a lifetime trip that you will always be glad that you did.

Nothing crazy but as far as boring highway driving goes, try taking 77 through the West Virginia turnpike between destinations. Just stay out of the way of the crazy 18 wheelers doing 90+ around the long bends.
