High pitch whine noise..but with a twist
hey guys
high pitch noise, louder with speed - not revs and sound is only there while in 4th gear with clutch out.
after searching here and listening to sounds via youtube, i was convinced with was the transfer
BUT
i saw a family mechanic - he doesnt specialise in evos but has gone general mechanical work for a while now.
he says that if it was the transfer, it should be whiney all the time no matter what gear, clutch in or out, it will whine with speed.
this makes sense to me but is this true?
secondly, my mechanic said it could be gearbox bearings or gearset relating to 4th gear.
there is no noises in 1st, 2nd, 3rd or 5th. Reverse is fine also.
I seemed to have noticed the noise recently and the only thing ive done recently is install a blox gearbox mount.
ive checked for boost leaks, but even if there was one, it should still make nosies in 3rd at full boost but theres no noise..
anyone had this before?
Thanks

Does the car shift ok (especially into 4th)? Any other issues with driveability? The only thing changing the mount could have done was to transfer more noise or "resonance" but that should be in all gears.

gearbox shifts ok in all gears. I get the common notchyness into 2nd but no crunching or anything.
Driveabillity is normal. 4th gear pulls good. Slight decelereation noise only in 4th gear but only at 30-60mph ...any faster its normal and at lower speeds its normal too.
the noise is slightly different to the 1st and 2nd gear whine. This noise is higher pitch - almost like a sweing machine....
fluid dropped from gearbox and transfer, all looks clean....

i think your transfer case is gone, you rebuilt your tranny but now you need to do your transfer.
my noise is only in 4th gear, no other gears....im thinking mine is bearings or something...
