does my evo need new clutch or synchro or both??

So I have been having problems with my evo, its a 2005 with alot of bolt ons and pushing roughly 650ish to the wheel right now. But I have been having a problem with my transmission it seems like every time I try to down shift to 4th gear from it grinds a little, and also when I'm at full throttle its super hard to change gears. I'm running an act hd ss clutch right now. I wanna know were these problems are coming from a bad synchro or clutch any help would be great thanks.

Those are common to the clutch I believe. There have been reviews about the ACT HD clutch having issues with high power evos.

So is the clutch causing the small grind as well?

my car does not grind down shifting, but going from first to second around 7k RPMs it sometimes wont go into gear. i also have the ACT HD SS clutch. i only have 300ish hp. i thought it was my synchros, so this hole time it could just be the clutch?

Yes, according to what I have heard from friends who use this clutch it can have these issues and also risk of locking.

However, I wouldnt say that you need to get a new clutch or that the ACT HD is a bad product.

Syncros for sure. I just had my tranny rebuilt, no more grinds downshifting. My tranny used to grind shifting into 3rd at WOT and donwshifting into 4th.

I am wondering why you are even trying to downshift. My theory is that its cheaper to replace brake pads than a clutch. i never use the transmission in a car to slow down. I know a bit off topic sorry. I hope its your clutch and not your synchros a clutch is easier to replace.

I ask the same thing to a relative whos a Lead Tech, he says putting in a new clutch won't stop the grind. It's the syncros.

So I am gonna have to get the syncro checked out for sure, But I was gonna get a twin disk anyways. A lot of people tell me they are the way to go. But since I might be having to change a syncro I think I might go ahead and give my tranny to shep to rebuild, That way even if the tranny aint bad I still have a great racing tranny in it.

If you're competent and you can rev match there is no wear to the clutch.

I'd say the syncro might be on its way out. IMO Heel-toe shift if in insist on downshifting. But dont learn on the EVO, its too expensive.

I have the ACT and it is going to drain your pockets. I was on a budget when I bought it but it has now caused the following due to lockout:

Replaced 2nd,3rd, and now need a 4th gear synchro....Replaced transmission bearings, replaced shift fork. So far Ive spent $500x3=$1500 just for pulling and replacing tranny plus parts which were easily $500....All in all saving 1k on the clutch versus a twin disk Ive spent double that in repairs. If I dont shift at 6500rpms or earlier I get locked out. I would never reccommend an act product to anyone for the evo specific. Im not sure about other cars.

For your situation Id say the lockout is from the clutch and the grind is a bad synchro. Get a new clutch as Im going to and have the synchro changed and all others checked when your shop pulls the tranny. Good luck I feel your irritation.

I have a similar problem but it's with 5th. It sounds like its a synchro problem, but you might want to replace the clutch with a different type. Regardless, there's going to be wear to the synchro and gearing....

i have the same problem with my brand new excedy twin dics... downshifts to 3rd and 4th are hard... i adjusted the clutch pedal and it helped a little... my car only has 30,000mi on it.
