buying a used 05 evo mr
Found a used evo that I'm gonna buy. Its an 05 evo with 46k miles on it. Looks like its got an apexi intake, turboxs tbe, tune, and I don't know if it has a blow off valve or the intake just makes the sound louder. But its not a chirp, just really loud air exiting. Has a seibon carbon fiber hood that I will be looking at getting rid of for a stock silver hood. Can I just run a normal lancer hood? Anything else I should look for?
Thanks

bring this car to mitsu to look it over, you clearly have very little understanding about cars so there is no shame there...
its because they dont own one, take any car and put 500hp threw it and bash gears, you will have issues...... 60,000 miles not a single issue. factory clutch went at 52,000 miles. 340awhp drives great. make sure you maintain it and dont drive it like its a rental you will be fine.

Whenever I buy a car I always check the vin numbers on the car, fenders, motor etc to make sure they are original and matching.
Running a car fax on it will help but wont always tell you everything. I always check the paint to see if it was ever hit, a quick way to tell is to run your finger in every door jam, gas tank hole, hood and trunk gaps and if you feel/hear a sand paper kind of sound chances are it is over spray from being repainted and would also possibly indicate an accident of some sort.
Most body shops don't bother to clay bar the over spray in the jams and if you know what you are talking about you can talk down the seller and if they lie to you about it then chances are they will lie about something else wrong with the car so buyer beware.
If the tranny is tough to get into gears or pops out of gears when you are driving or grinds or whatever then either steer clear of the car or plan to replace it and depending on how much power your looking to put down maybe opt for a 5spd instead which is what I just did and is benig built as I write this.
At 46k you are getting close to havnig to do the timing belt, water pump, etc so I would find out if it has complete service records and even call the places it has been to find out the scoop on the car, taking it to Mitsu isnt a bad idea if they let you but they will most likely charge you for a thorough inspection.
As mentioned before you do not want to run a regular hood, the vent is there for a reason as they run retardedly hot, You will come to learn that you can see the heat dissipation when you are simply sitting at a stop light coming out of the hood from the turbo manifold lol
Personally I would try to find out who tuned it and even go as far as to take it to a reputable shop to check the map so you know that it is tuned correctly.
Simple things like pulling the plugs and checking the color will tell you about the car, checking the oil and how clean it was, people who keep every record of anything done to the car is a good sign, if they got nothing then I would be careful because basic maintenance probably wasnt done...
If you get it checked out and you have to put alot into it either get a great deal or walk away

Wow, clearly you can tell that from my 1 post... All I want to do is de-rice it a bit. No need for a dealer to look it over. I'm far from the most knowledgable when it comes to evo's, that's why I'm asking these questions.
06MRV8killer,
Thanks for the informative post, its a works p2 tune. I'm guessing a mail order tune. Thanks for the heads up on the timing belt and stuff, figured it would be do at 100k miles. Also I work in a professional atmosphere and don't need the street racer negative image, that's the reason for asking about the regular lancer hood. I figured the evo hood allowed for cooling but I wasn't sure if it would cause the vehicle to overheat.
Thanks for the responces so far.

Belt service at 60k, as for the trans issue it all depends on what you are going to do with the car. I would have loved a 6-speed for all the miles I do. But yeah, if your gonna push it the 5-spd is the way to go.
Good Luck with it.

1st through 3rd gears are actually thicker than the 5 speeds and hold up great to high horsepower. 4th onwards get a little dicey with most failures on the 4th synchro. If I could go back to when I bough my car I would have waited and purchased a 06 RS...but if you really wanna know, the things that make the mr worth it, aluminum weight reduction, the strut/spring combo are amazingly effective, the lightweight BBS rims (hard to come by, and normally swapped for the enkei's), the 6speed which is great for non drag monsters, the 10.5 hotside 16g turbo instead of inferior 03 04 models, boost gauge, acd! which gets work done with a reflash. Things that suck, no short shift options, 6speed depending, no mivec, no evo 9 seats...I'm sure I'm missing stuff.

If I could go back, I would probably have gone for a GSR, for the 5 spd. If you have plans on making serious modifications, I would suggest starting with a GSR. However, if you plan on light modifications and comfortable street car, the MR is the way to go. The suspension is excellent, you get the ACD, the 10.5 hotside, some aluminium body components, and aside from not being the strongest trans, it shifts very smooth. Just my opinion.....
