Think about it. If the price of a BRAND NEW engine with all the required parts mentioned earlier costs 2000 dollars less than that, there is something VERY wrong. check it out http://www.lancershop.com/customer/p...2&cat=0&page=1

+1

Even at my local dealership, they had a sign for an Evo crate engine, and it was less than what you're being charged for your rebuild.

I would bet the labor on an engine install is less than 2k and you would have brand new everything and still have a core to sell or for a later build. That is if you are staying stock block for now.

Depending on labor rates, yes. Let me break it down for you.

Motor. In this case we would use a Buschur short block. about 3200.00
Head. Should be reusable but will require machine work. Depending on what went wrong I could see it being anywhere from 500-1k.

So thats just the beginning.
New oil pump. 239.00
oil cooler. 229.00
Full timing belt kit with new water pump. 510.00
New OEM gasket set 300.00
New head studs 100.00
Suggest a new oil filter housing as well 80.00
Labor, just an estimate. 1500.00
Oil with filter 50.00
fluids for Trans and transfer case 60.00
And I am sure I am missing things.

Total of 6768 plus tax is.....7309.00 Pretty close assuming I am missing a few things and thats figuring the head work to only be 500. I am sure it would probably need valves and guides as well so Add atleast another 5 and you get very close.

If you are dropping off a broken car, they install a built engine with no block core and you leave with a running car, $8K is not so bad.

Anyone who has done the labor themselves knows how much is involved to swap an engine. Then you have the cost of rebuild materials and the labor to change the cylinder head and install those materials. Its not as simple as some make it sound and if you are not experienced in doing that level of work to your car, you're much better off to allow pros to do it.

Yes, dealer wants 8k for a new motor. Someone had a full engine for 3k in the sales forum.

I love how people quote internet short block prices and somehow assume its going to crawl into the car by itself.

Oh yeah, and the broken engine inside the car is going to magically disappear. Damn those "stealer"ships.

If the short block is still usuable, you save alot of money that way. If a rod exited the block, which i dont think it did in your case, that will cost another ~$1800-2200. YMMV. Machine shop is easily $750-1300. Mine cost $1300 for machine shop labor. Just so you know im not talking out of my ***. Labor on removing engine, and putting it back + various other random necessary labor = $1500-$2000, YMMV. Hell why not...timing belt 60k bits = $$$. Plus all those things STM listed...$3000-4000 for the shortblock internals upgrades. Again YMMV, H-Beams, I-Beams, what have you.

Its gonna be at least $7k. At most $9k. Huh, car needs to be tuned? whats that? Thats another $200-400. Don't forget shipping charges, engine wont walk over to shop aka Buschur, AMS, what have you...and then walk back. Wait at least 2months before you see car again.
