Talking Shell build up

i am planning to buy a shell probably 8 or if i get lucky 9. never owned an evo but had 2 integras, i built a type r from scratch and it was a lot of fun until it got stolen so now i want to get my hands on something different. not for track just tastfully moded daily maybe weekend car

my main concerns is how are the parts interchangeable between different years? like if i had a 2003 and want to have 2006 seats, door panels, steering wheel, wheels, bumpers, lights... etc

does it worth looking for shell newer than 2003, other than being newer?

also, what would be a good stock motor/trans?

im not new to how forums work so please don't tell me where search is located, i want to build up post counts too so i could start using marketplace sooner

Sounds like it should be a fun project. Evos VII - IX are all the same CT9A chassis thus all the parts should be interchangeable.

basically everything can be swapped between the 7-8-9, the only thing that doesnt would be the camshafts and headgasket. other than those 2 things i believe everything else can be interchanged

Not really sure you'd be better off with a Shell than a complete car. Evos are still new enough that with the exception of blown drivetrain parts, a shell might be hard to come by.

Man up and just buy an IX, its got all the goodies

Platform is the same, but the parts are not all interchangable. Depends on what motor you will use (2.0, 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4). Most of the parts you will be able to use regardless from an 8 or 9.

Examples:
Mivec vs non
ACD vs non
5speed vs 6speed

Thank you for the above post the others have alot of mis information in them. The items he listed are important factors and to be honest to build one up could cost you alittle more then just buying one thats already cheap.

good info! Sounds like ill have to do some research on the motors. but as far as mivec, ACD is if the chases comes already equipped for that i will keep it there otherwise less electronics is my way to go since i like to control the car and not the car telling me how to drive it :P

to buy one as a whole is not fun and i would need a bigger budget at once, when you get it bare bones you build it the way you want to be and enjoy the process, plus you get to know the car very well

for now i have 350z which will have to go soon because it doesn't really satisfy me. so my option number two is if i find someone before i buy a shell with a clean evo who's willing to do a trade, i will do that

only 1 post has misinformation, when it comes down to it almost everything is interchangable.

either transmission can be run, all suspension can be used, interiors can be changed, body parts can swap. any catback can be used but the downpipe will be different if you have acd or not. if you have the wiring harness for an 8 then you run the non-mivec motor which will decide on which stock ecu you use, and camshafts will be different depending on if you get the mivec motor or not. hope this helps you

that makes sense, im assuming 9 is the only one that came with mivec so if i get 8 i don't have to worry about it just have to make sure the motor is not mivec

is acd a separate piece of electronic or it's inside the ecu? and what else it ties into, like trans, steering, driveshaft, brakes..?

since u mentioned about ecu, is there any reflash versions for the ecu if you run with common mods?

If all you are getting to start is a shell, then it doesn't matter what the build is yet. You can go with a stock 8 or 9 build, a fully built or custom.

The key thing here is you still can't just buy any parts and not worry about compatibility. You need to decide on a build to determine what key components you will need that may be required to what you want.

Don't let anyone tell you that just getting any major part will work.

Transfercase clears the only thing you have to worry about-which isn't a prob. anyhow

Most of the parts are interchangeable. Just make sure the exhaust system that you fit/buy in their will clear your transfercase.

I did this with a 91 stealth es and converted it to a 94 3000gt vr4. That was a lot of fun, I am sure you will enjoy it.

I just traded that car for an evo 8, so hey, all that work was worth it, even after I got bored of the car!
